Beach Vacations With Dogs – Leo Carrillo State Park, named after a 1950s actor and conservationist, is a fun place for nature lovers of all kinds. The state park is located on Highway 1 in Malibu and has great hiking and camping. For sea lovers, there is a 1.5 km beach perfect for sailing, swimming and beach jumping. For us, we love the dog-friendly beach at North Beach, just north of Lifeguard Tower 3.
We spent Monday morning here at Leo Carrillo’s. We want to find a new ocean adventure for the pup, and we’re willing to drive to get it. After all, it’s a lazy summer day, even between letting out of school and starting a summer job. So the food was packed and we headed north to the US. 101 to Malibu. From the 101 North, we took Canaan Road to Mulholland Highway and continued to Encinal Canyon Road and its turnoff. We finally hit the Pacific Coast Highway and except for the TPMS sensor and my brief panic attack, it was pretty fun.
Beach Vacations With Dogs
By the time I pulled into the PCH, about four miles from Dog Beach, our son was crying loudly. He got out of bed and went to the trunk of the car and dutifully waited, if a little impatiently, for our picnic supplies. We headed out, easily found the 3 lifeguard towers, and continued north and down the beach. Being a Monday afternoon, Naya Beach was relatively quiet. Fewer families have canine companions, unlike the dog-free beaches in the south. The area is very busy, the dog days of summer are bright and people flock to the beach to escape the intense heat of the city. To be honest, although it wasn’t that cold, I wished I had brought a light sweater to ward off the sea breeze.

But that doesn’t stop the fun. Owen enjoys walking on the sand and surfing. Although he is a good walker on land, he chooses to stay with us when it comes to water. I don’t know why. As a retriever, he loves water bodies, filled with lakes and streams, but for some reason, he is more shy to go near the sea alone. Perhaps he understood the vastness of the Pacific. Or maybe he’s never been in the ocean because his first trip to the beach was when he was older.
After a moment of introspection, I turned my back on him and took him for a walk. We explored the cliffs and caves. These places look familiar, not only from the first visit last year without a pupper baby, but also from the popular show. Leo Carrillo is a famous movie site, and Sammy pointed out a spot from his favorite set of the time.
. According to Movie Maps, Janet “died” several times. Oblivious to the scene, Owen takes a deep breath, marks his territory, and happily wets his feet.
Soon we were about an hour from home so it was time to think about some dinner. We traveled down the road to the beach and back to the parking lot. We tried to clean up before Owen got back into the car, a futile exercise in keeping the car from smelling like water dog. That’s fine; I still roll the windows down and let in as much of the cool Malibu air as we can. So when we travel to the beach – both humans and animals.
