The best way to make sure your pet doesn’t get lost is to have them microchipped. A microchip is a small chip about the size of a grain of rice that is injected by a veterinarian between your pet’s shoulder blades. It is a permanent way to identify your pet in case of loss or theft. A stick scanner can be used to find out if a pet has a microchip, and most animal shelters and veterinary offices have one. There is a national registry that lists parents’ contact information.

At Humane Ohio, the microchips are implanted while the animals are under anesthesia, so they are not painful for the animal.

You can do this at any veterinary office, the Toledo Area Humane Society, or Humane Ohio (open hours only).

When a pet is microchipped, the pet’s parents usually receive a collar with an identification number. The tag also includes the owner’s name and an 800 number to call for contact information, but if the collar falls off, the person who finds your animal will need to take it to a vet or animal shelter that has a scanner to check for microchips. An estimated one million pit bulls die each year in shelters across the country. This is mainly due to overpopulation: there are too many dogs and too few houses. Responsible ownership can help us combat this huge problem by spaying or neutering your dog. Not only has it been shown to reduce the number of pit bulls in animal control facilities, in turn reducing the number of euthanized pit bulls, but it also improves your dog’s health and happiness. Neutering your dog can reduce or eliminate the chance of certain types of cancer, improve behavior, and reduce the chances of roaming among other benefits. The procedures are extremely low risk and most dogs recover within a few days. On the other hand, there are no proven benefits to not spaying your dog, and many of the reasons given for not spaying or neutering are false: spaying your dog won’t make him lazy, your dog won’t be sad if he doesn’t have one. Children or companions, and dogs are no better to be “just a litter”.  No matter how responsible a dog owner is, mistakes can happen. The only way to make sure you don’t accidentally (or intentionally) contribute to the pit bull overpopulation problem is to have your dog spayed or neutered.

In women, this is known as sterilization, and the traditional method is “ovarian hysterectomy,” which involves removing the ovaries and uterus.

In addition to the traditional methods of spaying and surgical sterilization, there are two new types that are gaining popularity.

Ovariectomy involves neutering the dog by removing only the ovaries, and this is usually done by laparoscopic neutering. This is a “lock-us” surgery, which is less invasive and usually means an easier recovery for your dog.

Finally, there is chemical oxidation. Male dogs can be chemically castrated by placing a chip or implant under the skin that contains a hormonal drug called supralorin. The chemicals lower your dog’s testosterone and make him temporarily infertile for six to 12 months.

When you consider that you’ll need to renew the chip every six to twelve months, it’s not really a cheap alternative to traditional lifelong castration.

“Chemical castration is not often used, and when it is, the most common reason is to perform a ‘trial’ castration to see how the surgery will affect your dog’s behavior,” veterinarian Dr. Kate Henstridge explains.

“It’s also occasionally used by breeders who know they want to breed their offspring in the future, but haven’t yet!”

Later we will see how much veterinarians charge for chemical castration and laparoscopic spay compared to traditional spay surgery.

Simply put, spaying is the process of making a female infertile and a castration process for a male dog.

In November 2023, we checked the cost of spaying and neutering dogs with 72 vets across the UK.

Garland County Prevent “littering” Spay & Neuter Program

Our research shows that the average cost of neutering a male dog in 2023 is now £279.27, an increase of 26% since the last veterinary survey in 2022.

Neutering a female dog is 32% more expensive than a male dog. This is because the surgery is more invasive for the woman, takes more time and requires more care.

Although the national average cost to spay (neuter) a male dog was £279.27, the cheapest we found for a small dog at a practice in South Wales was £120. The most expensive was £572 for a large dog at a vet in London.

The cheapest we could find was £180 for a female dog at surgery in Cardiff. The price rose to £689.50 for a large dog at the vet in Glasgow.

The average cost of a sterilization is £369.70, but this is only for standard sterilization – laparoscopic (keyhole) sterilization is usually more expensive, so we’ve excluded it from our average prices here. Next we will look at the typical costs of keyhole sterilization.

One of the reasons for this huge difference in neutering costs is that neutering is cheaper for small dogs than for large dogs.

While veterinarians vote on just one price for neutering, we use it for all dog size classifications. But most provide prices by size range, so we split our average values into small, medium, and large dogs.

How Much Does It Cost To Get My Dog Spayed

The most common price ranges were 25kg for small, 25-45kg for medium and over 45kg for large, so we used that as a guideline for our average.

Spay & Neuter

Where there is no mean value, we use the midpoint of the small and large values. Where there is more than one “average” value, we use the highest.

It’s the same story for spaying: big dogs are more expensive than small dogs. The average cost for a large female dog is £413.55 and for a small female it is £326.16.

Where you live in the UK can make a big difference to how much you pay to have your dog neutered.

Areas of the UK with the highest cost of living are also often the areas with the highest neutering costs, as veterinary care is more expensive in these areas.
