Backhall is surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in the Yorkshire Dales, making it an ideal base for walkers and nature lovers. The original farmer’s cottage, built in 1705, has had some nice extensions added over the years, while the beautiful gardens feature centuries-old oaks and weeping willows. Food (mostly made with Dales produce) is served in the modern restaurant and bar, and afternoon tea can be taken in the cozy lounge, where there is an open fire. Dogs are allowed in the restaurant and free of charge in 21 rooms (up to three can stay).

It looks like a castle, with baronial ramparts, corner towers, battlements and a large entrance tower. Inside, it’s an old-school, English stately home, with acres of polished hardwood floors and deep red carpets, wide hallways hung with gilded pictures and large windows. You won’t be bored here: as well as a number of rural pursuits, there are hiking trails (dogs are welcome to stay for £25 a night), a four-acre walled garden, a nine-hole golf course and a cookery school. . The beautiful and airy spa offers a variety of thermal experiences and indoor and outdoor pools. The rooms, although in need of updating, are perfectly comfortable, with lovely Sylvie Jane touches, local books and generous sized bathrooms.

Although only 10 minutes from Scarborough beach and Razmataz, this hotel feels deep in the country, surrounded by fields, forests and its own very beautiful gardens. The former Victorian farmhouse, all ivy-covered golden stone and cream-coloured sash windows, has been sympathetically extended with additional wings and two courtyards with beautiful water features. Inside, it aims to maintain a cottage feel but with country house sophistication. Dogs are very welcome (£10 per night) and can join their owners when dining in the conservatory. The 32 rooms are all decent sizes and some have four-posters.

Devonshire Fell is set in the stunning North Yorkshire countryside, with walks, trails and a pretty Dales village on the doorstep. The hotel is part of the Duke of Devonshire’s 30,000-acre Bolton Abbey estate, a 12th-century ruined abbey.
