Sydney’s Northern Beaches have the most dog-friendly beaches in Sydney. However, none of these beach dogs are on the beach front, at least not yet.

There is a proposal by the Northern Beaches Council to allow dogs on a limited basis at the southern end of Mona Vale Beach and the northern end of Palm Beach. However, a final decision has not been made, and after the last update in August 2023, the fourth won’t happen until 2024.

Since this Sydney dog beach is in Pittwater, it’s quiet, and not far from a deep swim for dog walkers. Usually the dog washing machine stops next to it.
Try to get one-hour parking spaces near the unsold section, parking is expensive in my experience unless you stay long. Afterwards, take a stroll around the brewery to enjoy a drink in Newport’s beer garden.
Although none of the many Northern Beaches are dog-friendly, there are dog-friendly areas around the lakes behind the beach. To the south of this is Curl Curl Lagoon.
Head south of Curl Curl Lagoon to the Flora and Ritchie Roberts Sanctuary, where dogs are allowed to jump and many dogs enjoy swimming in the lawn. (Adam Street Park on the west side of Griffin Road also allows dogs to run and is close to the beach, but no sandy beach.)

Ponds can be muddy, be warned, especially after heavy rain, so be careful, especially if your dog gets into deep water. Also note that dogs are not allowed on Curl Curl Beach near the Flora and Ritchie Roberts Nature Reserve. Parking is chargeable, but there are parking lots nearby.
To the south is another pond where dogs can swim. Manly Lagoon is located north of Manly Beach in the Queensleaf area.
Manly Lagoon Park and Lagoon Park West, also known as “Lagoon Reserve” on Google Maps, are dog parks. And of course, there’s nothing to stop many dogs from taking to the lake.
As with Curl Curl Lagoon, be aware that the water may not be the best, especially after a few days of rain. In this case, you can keep your dog in the pool if you don’t want him to swim in it.
Doggy Day Out
For a walk before or after, consider walking your dog on the boardwalk behind Queensleaf Beach and Manly Beach, south to Ferry Bower and Shelly Beach. Walking on the beach is great, but be aware that some of these beaches do not allow snorkeling on the sand. There are outdoor restaurants.
When I lived on Sydney’s North Shore, Sandy Bay in Clontarf was my favorite beach in Sydney. There are no dogs allowed signs, but according to the court’s website, dogs are legal here, and there is no time limit. The website also has a map showing the exact location that is not available for purchase.
This is not a favorite of many dog owners, especially during the hot summer months. It’s close to central Sydney and the water is clear and shallow, perfect for small, confident dogs. Be warned, it’s best to stay at high tide, as most of the beach can disappear under water at high tide.
Please note that dogs are not allowed on the beach at Clontarf Nature Reserve, except at the start of Sandy Bay Road. However, dogs are allowed in the park, and there is plenty of parking, albeit for a fee. (There are several ticketless parks near Sandy Bay, but they fill up quickly.) At the marina, Sandy Bear welcomes dogs in outdoor areas.
Dog-friendly Road Trip
Located on the west coast of Pittwater, surrounded by a national park, is the small opposite of Great Mackerel Beach. Available only on Palm Beach boats (dogs allowed outside), or on your own boat.
Dogs are allowed in the Mackerel Beach Dog Zone from sunrise to 9:30 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to sunset every day of the week. Outside these hours, the beach is allowed, but must stay away.
Dogs are allowed on the beach between the jetty and the north cabins. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the shallow water or in the water, so don’t go swimming with your dog.
Sydney’s Lower North Shore also has dog-friendly beaches around the main town of Mosman, along Sydney Harbour. Check out the fun dog beach options, but remember that hours are limited, especially on weekends.
The Best Dog-friendly Hiking Trails In Australia
The most popular beach for dogs in the Mosman region is Sirius Cove Reserve, a quiet area west of Taronga Zoo.
There are some limitations as explained here. Dogs are allowed on the beach and in the water during the week, but on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays they are allowed before 9am and after 4pm.
The same hours apply to the nearby grassy park, but happy dogs will let you join them for an afternoon walk in the shady park. from the streets, with easy and free parking.
Across the water from Spit Bridge are two spit reserves, Spit West Reserve and Spit East Reserve, separated by the busy Spit Road. Both of these reserves are dog friendly, although there are rules set by the Mosman Council.
Best Things To Do With Your Dog In Sydney & Darling Harbour
All reserves allow dogs to exercise all day from 8:30am to 2:30pm on Saturdays at Spit West Reserve. As for going to the beach and swimming, dogs are allowed during the week, but only until 9am or 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and weekends.
Check the map on the page linked above for the exact boundaries of the two reserves. The Spit East Reserve is small, between Sydney Harbor Pier and restaurants to the south. The Spit West Reserve is huge, stretching all the way to Pearl Bay, but the beach is not always accessible. Keep your dog away from busy roads and learn about the value of parking.
Another dog-friendly beach in the Greater Mosman area is at Clifton Gardens Reserve, also known as Chowder Bay.
As explained on the website, dogs are allowed on the beach and waters east of Clifton Gardens. They are allowed on the beach during the week, at 9 am or after 4 pm in the winter. During daylight hours, the beach is allowed before 9 am or after 6 pm.

Dog rules around the park are relaxed and dogs are allowed all day, except at 9am and after 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and weekends. Must stay on the rope for some hours. (This is a popular vacation spot.)
Parking is expensive at Clifton Gardens and you can walk around the hill for free. Or combine a trip to the beach with a walk in the woods. If you stop at the French Cafe or George’s Head, it’s a short walk down Middle Main Road.
