Our son, Lincoln, has been traveling with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we fell in love with travel. Simply put, jumping in the car is the most accessible way for us to travel with it (and we bring Lincoln everywhere).

So we thought about our travel guide and created this road trip with Lincoln’s history in mind. If you are looking for dog friendly trails because you have a dog that loves to do everything you do while you are walking, this is for you!
Lincoln is taking you to New England on this road trip because summer and fall temperatures are warm, outdoor activities abound, and you’ll find the most dog-friendly state parks in America.

In the summer, take advantage of the longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures than you’ll find in many other countries at this time of year. Or take a fall trip to one of the best places in the world to take advantage of the spectacular fall foliage for leaf viewing.
We spent five months in Ontario and New England during the 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long week camping on the Schodok Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY from mid to late August, month in Kempton, NH in September that. Ellsworth. , ME in early October and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)
There was never a bad time in New England this month. Sure, the summer months can get hot at night, but make sure your rental has air conditioning, and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we’re talking like people who live in Texas, so our heat tolerance is probably higher than those who live up north year-round. That said, we don’t do anything without air conditioning, so in that sense, our tolerance is probably little, haha!)
Dog-friendly Days Out
However, we would say that if you want to plan your road trip for the best fall planting, aim to travel in the second week of October. While the most popular locations for planting will be busy (ie Kankamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the view will be worth it!
RTL Tip: Need more time to walk or be on the water during your trip? Visit in July or August. Do you want to smell the autumn leaves with hot cider in your hand? Visit in October. Want cooler temperatures but smaller crowds? Visit in September.
Lincoln no doubt loves the trips we can take because it means it’s easier for him to be with us. If you are close enough to any point on this road trip to drive, we recommend this. Drive to the next stop on this trip and take a complete loop to get home.
However, if you can’t get here by car, and you have a dog that does well on a plane, you can fly into Boston International Airport and pick up a rental car when you land. If you are flying, we recommend shortening this trip and driving from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

We recommend treating this trip like a traditional cruise, as you have different stays at each stop of the trip. You can explore campsites near each location or stay overnight in nearby towns.
For Lincoln, NH, consider Pimi River or Lost River Valley Campgrounds or downtown Lincoln. (Can’t find anything in Lincoln? Check out Kempton, NH, just 20 miles south. We spent a wonderful month in a red clay cabin in Kempton.)

For Stowe, consider Smuggler’s Note State Park Campground or downtown Stowe. (You can also explore about 40 minutes from Burlington. Downtown Burlington is great for dogs!)
For Acadia National Park, consider Blackwoods Campground or the town of Bar Harbor. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you end up in Ellsworth, check out the Blue Hill hike at sunset. It’s gorgeous, dog-friendly, and has 1/100 views of Acadia. That compares!
Lincoln (the town, not to be confused with our dog of the same name) is wonderful in the middle of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This is a great place to start a dog walk.

You could easily spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire on your own because there are so many dog-friendly things to do nearby! (We spent a month here and couldn’t do and see everything on our list!)
But since we’re only planning one day for you to enjoy the White Mountains on this road trip, here are our top tips for the best things to do.
This is a bonus because you can drive the Concamagus Highway from Portland to Lincoln. (So whenever you’re driving on your trip, come back to this section. If you’re not actually planning this trip, consider driving the two hours there and back on the Kankamagus Highway while you’re in Lincoln.)

Best Dog Friendly Destinations In Europe
The Kankamagus Highway is 34 miles between Lincoln, NH, and Conway, NH. It is one of the most popular drives in New Hampshire and one of the best places in America to see fall foliage. Although there are many viewpoints and trails along this scenic drive that can keep you busy throughout the trip, we recommend stopping at only a few viewpoints and there are no lifts on this route. (We’ve got better ones coming!) Note: Visiting this fall? Get it first. This drive fills up quickly, so drive the night before or get up early to avoid long lines and heavy traffic at your next destination. The Concamagus Highway is great, but not your only adventure of the day!
Let’s get you and your dog out of the car and into the woods! Hiking kept us very busy during our month in New Hampshire. We were looking every weekend and most weekends. Spending time outside and hiking is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.
You can see all of our favorite hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top recommendation, we recommend going to Welch-Dickey Mountain. This approximately 4.4 mile loop is a fun half day hike with more mountain views. For the dogs, good exercise and lots of fun as you hike up to various spots between exposed rock formations and wooded trails.
If you explore this hike by all trails, look for the Welch-Dukey Loop Trail (not “Welch Mountain Rock Ledge” or “Welch and Dickey Mountain”). By following the trail the entire loop you are at the edge of the cliff

Both Welch and Dickey mountains. We recommend climbing steps clockwise so you can climb up during peak times. (This is especially helpful if it’s wet or you’re visiting during the fall harvest season when the leaves are down. Take your time; the area can be slippery.)
