While doing a magazine piece for a national publication this summer, I interviewed local business owners in Asheville.

Jillian Kelly, Asheville beekeeper and owner of the store The Asheville Bee Charmer, says, “You have nothing to lose in Asheville, North Carolina!”
He is correct. This mountain town has something for everyone. All people and their unique, individual interests are welcome in Asheville. Whether you’re an adventure traveler, foodie, or history and culture seeker, you’ll feel right at home in this progressive North Carolina city.
Your beloved pet is also welcome. Like my poodle, Andy felt it on his recent stay.
I grew up near Asheville, North Carolina, but in the past nine years, I’ve visited Asheville more than any other part of the country. Our cow Andy has been with us for the past two years. Walking with a dog is similar in some ways to walking with children. Both require some extra work, but like small people, dogs can’t go everywhere with you, and they can’t stay in all living spaces. So, as pet owners, it’s a relief to know before you book your trip that your four-legged family member is welcome too.
The 15 Best Boutique Hotels In Asheville
Asheville is one of the friendliest cities in America, I think that’s a true reflection of the city. Sometimes, I see many dogs wandering the streets as I walk. The Loft Hotel in downtown Asheville has the distinction of being, in my opinion, one of the most desirable hotels in all of North Carolina.
Aloft Downtown Asheville operates a popular pet adoption program that allows rescue dogs to stay at the hotel until they find a new home. The program was so successful that it was piloted at other Aloft hotels in the United States. Your pet will feel like a top dog or top cat with its own “lobby-dog” as a hotel greeter. that’s right. And I said cat. The hotel does not discriminate against cats regarding their pet policy. Cats are free at home just like dogs. Cats, as you might imagine, aren’t as public as dogs, but Andy meets a furry stranger during his stay. If you have cat allergies or pet allergies, be sure to discuss this with the front desk before checking in.
I previously stayed at the Loft Downtown Asheville on Biltmore Street several years ago. My then five-year-old daughter loved the hotel’s hospitality program. Every year she tells us to go to the Aloft hotel lobby to see who is going to be adopted even though we are not there. In fact, I’ve found myself staying at the hotel over the years because of its prime location in Asheville’s South Slope district. Myself and I are craft beer enthusiasts, and this part of Asheville is where we decided to spend a lot of time. Aloft Asheville is within walking distance to everything in downtown Asheville, the Biltmore area is a quick ride away.
Nightly rates at this Aloft property may seem higher than what you’re used to seeing at other Aloft hotels in different areas. This is because Asheville hotels are in high demand, especially in the downtown area. In fact, on weekends, a room at the Aloft Downtown Asheville can cost travelers $400 to $500 a night. Marriott rewards people like me for getting discounts on those rates because of their brand loyalty.
Asheville Hotels Downtown
Many hotels charge a pet fee when traveling with a pet, but Aloft Downtown Asheville does not. All pets stay free in this property. Parking is also available in the parking lot below the hotel for a $10 discount per day.
Not only are pets always free at the Aloft Downtown Asheville, there are no public areas in the hotel. At the Aloft Asheville, you can grab food and drinks in the WXYZ Lounge, and your dog can be with you. It makes you feel at home when you stay there. I loved it, and I think Andy did too.
Aloft Asheville is so dog-friendly that it sometimes hosts “bow-wow”-style social events for dogs and their owners. It is a pleasure to stay at this hotel as many hotel guests share the same love for their pets.
In July, during my last stay, I learned that a woman had a dog that looked like my Andy in her house. He reminded him of the dog. I also met a couple from New Jersey with a dog named Opie. “Opie and Andy,” I said, “were the perfect combination for North Carolina.” Fans of the Andy Griffith TV show will understand why.

When Andy checked in at Alft in downtown Asheville, he was given a dog care package. He got a few bags of Pooh, diapers, water and food bowls, and a large dog bed for about 8 pounds. The front desk has a list of places where dogs can walk and have a great time in town.
