Linen is extremely durable, making it an ideal fabric for pets. It looks powerful, airy and amazing. Your dog wants to go back to bed right away. Linen is also anti-microbial, keeping your sheets away from bacteria, viruses and fungi. We recommend a white sheet set because you can easily wash and bleach if Fido’s paws get dirty on the bed.

As a former textile designer, I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn more about bedding and therefore, can confidently share with you how we balance pets and fine textiles! Here are some of the best dog bed tips + tips:

I mention this first because I’m sure we’ve all said to our pets at some point, “That’s why we can’t have nice things”. I even have a deck pillow that says it! But I mention adoption first because I truly believe there is a certain level of fabric destruction that always happens when you live with pets. Pets throw up, puppies have accidents, cats kick the living daylights out of everything… it happens. Sure, you can minimize the damage, but to protect your mental health, I really recommend that you get a certain level of acceptance that things are going to hurt.

I didn’t want this post to just be a list of brands or products that are the best bedding for pet owners. Instead, I want to give you some information on what to look for so you can be a smart customer and make your own decision! To get you started, here’s a brief guide to popular bed types and my thoughts on how they stand up to pets:

If you want linen bedding, buy pure hemp linen instead of a blend. Flax is the fiber that makes up linen thread, making it very strong… three times stronger than cotton or wool! I also recommend linen because it is a fabric that gets better with time and more washes. Some of the sources I read while researching for this post also said that linen can last up to 12 times longer than cotton.

Personally, I love percale sheets because they are crisp and cool to the touch – and great for pets. Always choose tightly woven cotton bedding. I recommend this because pet fur and nails are less likely to be woven into tight, smooth fabrics. Percale is usually woven tighter than satin, so go for it if that’s a concern.

Truly the worst pet costume ever! Just kidding…but velvet acts like a pet hair magnet. There’s a reason bristle brushes are made of velvet! I will say, I have friends who love plush upholstery because they are easy to brush off pet hair.

If you are concerned about pet hair, you may want to consider fabrics such as silk or satin, which are good at removing hair. I don’t like this type of sliding bed because it’s not my preference, but everyone has their preference! Silk and satin have their disadvantages, however, due to the cost of the fabric and long-term care.

I can’t tell you how many times Georgette peed on my bed. It’s embarrassing to admit, but when he does it he does it

, a few years ago, it ruined the memory foam mattress and I’ve been using a waterproof mattress cover ever since. I know it’s bad and probably affects the breathability of the mattress, but at the end of the day I don’t want to deal with a cat peeing on my bed.

I love feather quilts. It’s like sleeping under a cloud for me. But in the case of our pets, it proved to be a non-starter. I’m tired of taking my stroller to the dry cleaners and paying a lot when someone gets sick.

) on that. After another cat pee incident that ruined our comforter, I vowed to just go with the replacement bedding because it was machine washable. I made this change about 5 years ago and it works really well. This is one of my top tips for pet friendly bedding!

My biggest tip is to only choose bedding that is machine washable. Decorative pillows are not included. If you own a home, check the load capacity of your device. If you’re a renter, I recommend going to a laundromat and doing loads of laundry in their giant machines. Depending on how many beds you have, a visit to a dry cleaner may be the most efficient since you may have several machines at once. And don’t be afraid to dry your clothes, even if it takes longer. Don’t forget: the heat of the dryer can shorten the life of your clothes!

A Textile Designer’s Complete Guide To The Best Bedding For Pet Owners

Proper care of bedding and textiles is the best way to get the most out of your investment. Since our two dogs sleep in the bed with us, I take their bed.

) once a week and wash everything except the quilt. Sheets, pillowcases, blankets, quilts…all are washable. When washing things, I take time to remove pillows and duvets. I wash the quilt quarterly. Always read all fabric and bedding care instructions!

Some people mention that after refurbishing the bed, they put a layer over it as a protective layer, especially for pet hair. You could totally go that route, but I didn’t. Instead, I always use washable fabrics like linen and cotton.

In between washes, I freshen up my bed with pillow spray to keep everything smelling good. I sleep very hot and often have night sweats so this helps.
