Or so I thought, until I discovered that Edinburgh is a treasure trove of amazing dog-friendly bars and restaurants. If you like your steak well done, this is the place for you. Your dog may never be able to stand the smell of a juicy steak, but it will be well received. Please bring a doggy bag with you.
This wonderful wine cafe on the Water of Leith is a favorite of ours. Delicious drinks, cocktails and food with a Mediterranean influence.
Scottish food is served very well in the pub on Leith Walk. Luckily when we visited there were no real forest animals chasing Coco.
Home of Mama’s Burgers, the best gourmet burgers in town. Dogs also get biscuits (but sadly no burgers).
Dog-friendly Restaurants In Edinburgh 2023
A fantastic pub serving delicious food (expanding menu and venue on 21st October), they don’t allow dogs but welcome them outside in the large beer garden and both indoors and hot (even hot water bottles if you ask nicely.)
I’ll come right out and say it: No dogs are wanted in restaurants. Coco is a beautiful puppy with a terrible smell. In addition to his antisocial nature, we know this is a sign that his stomach is not happy with food. So we are determined to change this. You can’t buy dog food from the supermarket like you can for cats, you can get lucky but often fail.
After several failures, we found Butternut Box online and honestly, it was a game changer. This is human grade food; The company says you can eat it (which I completely agree with), so the quality is good. The difference in cocoa is huge. No farts, shiny fur, and a very happy puppy. It’s not cheap, which almost stopped us from trying it to be honest, but the food was amazing. We had to take him out for Christmas and he immediately turned into a ‘smelly’ dog.

Sunday roast season is just around the corner and the city is full of cozy bars and trendy restaurants… I’m often asked “Is Edinburgh dog friendly?” asked. Edinburgh is a completely dog-friendly city. Frequent travel means we rarely have time to explore Scotland’s capital with the kids. We had been looking forward to a weekend at home, so when Hotel Indigo invited us to visit their boutique hotel at York Place, we jumped at the opportunity.
The hotel is located in a row of Georgian town houses in the center of New Town. Shops, restaurants, bars, attractions, parks and more are right in front of the hotel. The hotel is within walking distance of Edinburgh main train station. The hotel is a good base for exploring Edinburgh as the airport tram service also stops outside.
Hotel Indigo has 60 rooms, ranging from comfortable double rooms to luxury suites. Facilities include a fitness room, bar and breakfast room. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, but there are plenty of restaurants next door so this isn’t a big deal.
Edinburgh’s Best Dog Friendly Apartments
We stayed in the ‘Supav Niwas’ package. For £15 per night, your four-legged friend can stay with you and enjoy a dog-friendly holiday in Edinburgh. The ‘Supava Stay’ package includes healthy snacks as well as a dog bed and bowls.
Our superior king rooms are spacious. There’s a large bed and seating area, as well as a mini bar (with snacks provided).
The decor and soft furnishings feature stylish teal accents, giving a modern twist to the classic Georgian interior.
It was a great place to hang out and relax, but we had the city to explore first.
The Cramond Inn, Edinburgh
After checking out of the hotel, we swapped the Georgian architecture for the tall buildings of the Old Town, the medieval heart of the city.
Our tour of the Old Town took us to Blair Street, just off the Cowgate. One of our favorite dog-friendly Edinburgh restaurants is on Blair Street, so it seemed like a good time to stop for dinner.
City Cafe is an American style restaurant that has been serving hot dogs, burgers and milkshakes to Edinburgh residents since the early 80s.
Inside, we were given our choice of tables and headed straight to a booth next to a 1950s-style jukebox. The music is good and the food choices on the menu are even better.

We both ordered ice cream – a cherry coke for me and a regular coke for Mr G. And since it was Friday, we also ordered alcoholic drinks – a pina colada for me and a slightly less fancy beer for Mr G.
For lunch, I had French fries topped with paprika, cheese, and lots of jalapeños. That’s great. Mr. G had macaroni cheese and fries and was equally happy with his choice.
After dinner we walked along the Royal Mile towards Holyrood Palace. This palace is the official residence of the Scottish monarchy and was once the home of Mary, Queen of Scots.
Our tour of the Old Town of Holyrood took us to New Calton Cemetery. A watchtower has been built to prevent body snatchers at a fearsome Georgian cemetery. Many graves are decorated with skulls and crossbones.

Now it’s time to rest. The child curled up in his dog bed and Mr. G and I sat down on our comfortable king size bed to watch TV.
The next morning we woke up, got up, showered and got ready for the next day. The sun was shining and we were looking forward to spending the whole day walking around town with the boys – but first we had breakfast.
I wasn’t sure how good breakfast would be in a hotel without a restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised. A variety of breakfasts are offered, including a wide selection of dishes and a variety of continental breakfasts.
We both chose a cooked breakfast; I chose ‘The Full Edinburgh’ (no nuts); It tastes delicious, especially the haggis. Mr G had his old favorite Egg Royale and the food did not disappoint.
A Dog-friendly Guide To Aviemore [2024]
Our first stop was St. James’s Quarter, on the doorstep of our hotel. The Galleria opened to great fanfare in summer 2021, replacing the 1960s main building. The new gallery has attracted many luxury shops and restaurants to the east of Edinburgh.
The Galleria is dog-friendly, with dog waterers and strollers available to rent if your four-legged friend isn’t up to shopping like you. Many shops and restaurants are also dog friendly; This includes John Lewis of England, which we also visited.
The boy inside walked a short distance to the dog section. It’s filled with treats, toys, and stylish clothing from brands like Barber and Joules.
After browsing, he chose a sweater and toy from the Barbour line. His little face was photographed when we took him to the gift cashier to pay.

As we’re not big shoppers, our trip to John Lewis was more than enough for a day’s worth of shopping therapy.
The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is just a few doors down from the Hotel Indigo. It was my favorite place in Edinburgh when I was a student, but I haven’t visited for years. Living on the doorstep gives me a great opportunity to visit the gallery at length.
The gallery is not dog friendly but there is a green field next door, so we took turns visiting, while the others sat with the child and enjoyed the autumn sunshine.
When you visit Edinburgh, you must visit the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; Not only is it filled with interesting works of art depicting famous Scots dating back hundreds of years; There’s also Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots, The Proclaimers, Billy Connolly and many more.
