It’s no secret that Colorado hikers love their dogs. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of trails open to dogs in Colorado, but with so many options to choose from, it can be difficult to narrow down your list and choose a trail. This list includes the 20 best dog sledding places in Colorado that I have ridden with my dog Becket.

Since moving to Colorado in 2016, I have spent many weekends hiking in the summer and fall, so I have a lot of experience hiking in Colorado. This is not an exhaustive list of dog-friendly hikes in Colorado, but I have done my best to include a good selection of the area’s best hikes of varying difficulty levels.

With so many people hiking and walking dogs on Colorado’s trails, it is important that everyone does what they can to minimize their impact on the environment. Here are some important tips to keep in mind when traveling with your dog in Colorado.

All of Colorado’s dog-friendly trails on this list are on public land. However, different jurisdictions have different rules regarding affiliation. Some national forest and wildlife areas require dogs to be on a leash, while others require dogs to be “under control” (this means kept on a leash or under strict vocal control). Some areas, such as Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, offer special programs where dogs can use voice and visual cards for walks. Please follow the rules when walking as the road is open to dogs.
L.a.’s Best Dog-friendly Hikes: Trails, Beaches, Parks
If the dog cannot recover, it should be kept on a leash. Always keep the leash on when walking your dog off-leash, or loosen the leash to swim when around other leashed dogs or children. Remember that keeping your dog on a leash while walking helps prevent unwanted pets and keeps your dog safe.
Ultimately, it is your responsibility as the dog owner to know and follow leash rules. Trailheads are usually well signed and will let you know if leashes are required, but rules and regulations can change at any time. When in doubt, use a tie!
When walking your dog in Colorado, remember to pick up animal waste. Animal waste is considered a biohazard and is therefore required by law to be packaged.
Please do not leave garbage bags on the side of the road. Even though you intend to come back to it, it is technically cluttering and encouraging other people who may not have the same intention to do the same. Take animal waste back to your head and dispose of it properly!
The Best Dog-friendly Trails In Wilmington
This list features the 20 best dog trails in Colorado. I hiked all the trails on this list with my dog Becket to get his permission. I deliberately included trails from throughout the region, with a mix of easy, moderate and difficult trails. When choosing a route, keep your dog’s walking skills and experience in mind.
For a quick and easy walk with your dog in the mountains, you can’t beat St. Mary’s Glacier. The trail is less than an hour from Denver, so it’s a great option if you want to hit the mountains but don’t have time to drive that far. From this trail, hikers take a short and wide hike to the lake at the foot of the “snow” (actually the area).
Saint Mary Glacier is a very popular mountain, so don’t be surprised if the trail gets full. That said, this is a great hike for people of all hiking abilities, including families with children. It is also a good walk for dogs due to the availability of water, especially in summer.
Trailhead Parking Difficulty: Moderately difficult. Parking is on private property and requires a $20 fee. There is plenty of parking, but since this is a popular tour, many spots can fill up when it gets busy.
Dog Friendly Hiking Trails In America: The Best Places To Walk Your Do
Best time to go: all year round. Get ready for snow on your way to spring. I recommend bringing micro spikes with you if you go hiking in the winter so you can walk.
That’s right, the Garden of the Gods is a full park, not a trail. But it’s one of my favorite dog-friendly places to hike in Colorado Springs, and you can’t go wrong with one of the park’s trails. In fact, your choice will be influenced by where you can find parking!
Another of my favorite hikes in the Garden of the Gods is the Siamese Twins Loop Trail. This is a short hike that takes travelers to a unique rock formation with two towers and a perfectly framed Pikes Peak window. You can easily choose alternative routes for your trip to make it as long or short as you want.
Trailhead Parking Difficulty: Difficult. The Garden of the Gods is a popular attraction in Colorado Springs. There are plenty of parking lots throughout the park, but since they can get full, you may have trouble finding a space. I recommend arriving early to beat the crowds.
5 Dog Friendly Hikes In Moab
Chicago Lakes is a great choice for a long alpine lake trip near Denver. You’ll descend over 18 miles and approximately 2,400 feet. on the climb, so it’s tough, but it’s a good workout if you want to go on a tough walk with your dog. Park at Echo Lake and head to Chicago Lakes, where you’ll find two mountain lakes in beautiful mountain scenery.
From Chicago Lakes, you can take a trip to Summit Lake at the base of Mount Blue Sky. You will find parking lots and toilets here. From there, you can continue to the summit of Mount Blue Sky, a 14-foot peak in Colorado, for another day of hiking (though I don’t recommend doing the big hike with dogs).
Trailhead Parking Difficulty: Difficult. Parking is limited and you’re competing for space with people who want to fish or relax at Echo Lake. I recommend arriving early to get a seat.
Herman Gulch is one of the best hiking trails near Denver if you’re looking for a dog-friendly trail with mountain views. The trailhead is located on I-70, so it is easily accessible by any vehicle. However, with crowd availability. Herman Gulch is a very popular mountain, especially in spring and summer.

The trail begins to climb from the parking lot, passing through forests and hills. The highlight of this hike is Lake Herman, which you will reach in just over 5 miles. This is a great place for kids to explore and splash around.
Trailhead Parking Difficulty: Easy. There is a large parking lot on the main road that is easily accessible from I-70.
Is a leash required?: Dogs must be under control at all times. The trail does not pass through a wilderness or established parkland, where trails must travel outside the Arapahoe National Forest.
You don’t have to go all the way to Arches National Park to go on a great hike. A unique gem can be found on one of the best dog trails in Colorado. Royal Arch in Boulder is a great dog trail if you’re looking for a good workout and a fun hike. There are several ways to start the hike to the King’s Arch, but most hikers start at Chautauqua Park. There are many routes here, so if you don’t know the area, be sure to download and take a map with you.
The Best Dog-friendly Hiking Trails Around Vancouver
The beginning of the trail is easy, but once you reach the King’s Arch the trail gets steeper, so get ready to get your blood pumping. Once you arrive at the Royal Arch, you will be able to admire the beauty of Boulder. You can climb onto the rocks behind the arch to grab a snack and rest before the hike.
Difficulty parking at trailhead: very difficult. The parking lot at Chautauqua Park fills up early, especially on weekends. Plan to park nearby and go ahead.
