Unlike Canada, US national parks do not allow dogs, and neither does Glacier National Park. This means that depending on the type of traveler you are, you may be able to bring your dog on your Northwest Montana vacation.
Dog Friendly Lodging Near Glacier National Park
Dogs are not allowed on trails within Glacier National Park, as backcountry hiking is one of the most popular activities in the area. You can bring your dog into the park, and dogs on a leash are allowed on the trails, campgrounds, and parking lots. Leashed dogs are also allowed in village areas (Many Glacier, Lake Macdonald and Apgar). Dogs are allowed on the bike path around Apgar and Route 2 west of West Glacier.
Must-see Glacier National Park Spots For Families (+ Surrounding Areas)
National forests are more dog-friendly than state parks, and you can walk your dog anywhere in the Flathead National Forest. Qualification is required in many places, but qualification laws do not seem to be strictly enforced.
Regional cities have common dog ordinances. The park has a small dog park (3.5 acres) on the south side of Kalispell.
Nearby, Whitefish offers the Hugh Rogers WAG Dog Park, ranked as the best dog park in America. The park features paved paths, benches, dog and human drinkers, public shelters, small dog areas, agility courses, dog pools and beaches, dog wash stations, trees and views of the surrounding mountains. Located in Armory Park on E 2nd Street at www.whitefishdogpark.org. Whitefish also has a bike path from downtown to the lake to the Whitefish River, perfect for dog walking.

Forest Service Road 10936 – Located 1/2 mile north of the Moose Mountain Inn, this road climbs the hillside through a hardwood forest (about 2 miles from the hotel).
Glacier Rim: This is the Forest Service access point on the north bank of the Flathead River, about a mile up the North Fork Trail, then 1/4 mile east to the river, a 2.5-mile trip. The hike offers access to Apgar Ridge and the Bald Eagle Nest downstream.
Bear Trail (#6500) and Wave Bear Trail (#6400): These are multi-track trails that range from 1 to 5 miles through open forest and planing. Cedar Ridge Trail (shown on some maps as Cedar Lake Trail) north of Columbia Falls.

Glacier National Park is a beautiful place where the mountains reach the sky along the length of the desert. But for dog walkers, national parks aren’t the easiest to visit.
Glaciers are one of the few places in North America where all native animals survive. Black and black bears, wolves and cougars roam the steep slopes and green valleys. Protecting the national park and its inhabitants means imposing strict restrictions on domestic animals.
The Best Places To Stay Near Glacier National Park
There are only a few trails on the glacier. One runs north and south along the west side of the park. Route 2 leads from East Glacier Park Village to West Glacier. The most famous “Road to the Sun” runs 50 miles east and west of the center of the park.
Walk to the Sun is by far the most popular theme park. The drive takes about 3 hours per hour, with a few stops along the way to take photos. Why don’t you want to give up the picture?
On the way to the sun, pets are allowed in established areas. This includes a picnic area, parking lot and 100 feet of sidewalk. Basically, it’s going to be a long day in the car for your dog.
If you’re driving your way to the sun (and you should), plan a few short stops along the way so your pup can go outside and stretch his legs.
Does Yellowstone National Park Allow Dogs?
There is only one way into Glacier National Park for dogs, and only if it is not covered in snow. The Macdonald Creek Bike Trail is a 2.5 mile trail between West Glacier and Apgar Village.
Does Glacier National Park accept fewer animals than you think? Consider taking a trip across the border to Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park!
We recommend taking the trail to West Glacier, getting Eddie’s Ice Cream on the way to Apgar, relaxing by Lake McDonald, and heading back.
Keep in mind that when hiking in Glacier National Park with your four-legged friends, you may encounter wildlife on the park’s trails and paths, so be careful. Bears have been known to chase dogs, which can be dangerous for you and your child.

For a great hike, head south with your dog to one of the national forests. Flathead, Kootenay and Lewis and Clark National Forest are a short drive away. All trails in all national forests are pet friendly!
In fact, dogs are allowed outside in many parts of the national forest. But for local wildlife, it’s no good if they don’t have a reliable memory.
Hungry Horse Reservoir in the Plains National Forest is gorgeous, and the trails are as beautiful as you are.

Flathead Lake is amazing. We spent a week near Glacier National Park giving it five stars for a great dog walk. A must see if visiting western Montana. You’ll find hiking, camping, outdoor activities, boating, swimming and more.
The lake is about an hour from the west entrance of Glacier National Park. It is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River: 30 miles long and 16 miles wide. So travel time may vary slightly depending on which side of the lake you visit.
Much of the area around Flathead Lake is part of the Flathead Indian Reservation, established in 1855 by the Treaty of Hell. The area is home to three tribes: the Salish, the Upper Pandean Oreli, and the Kootenay.
Along with state lands, six of Montana’s state parks are located along Flathead Lake. Together, these areas make up Flathead Lake State Park. Five state park locations are pet-friendly and allow dogs on leashes:

Yellow Bay offers camping only (first come, first served), but other dog-friendly campgrounds offer tents and RVs. Some even go hiking, biking, or boat camping! Cool Whip, Hercules and I camped in our car at Wayfarers, Big Hand and West Coast. Each offers a slightly different experience, so jumping into the pool was really fun.
Two of my favorite things about this park are the many animal shelters and the trail station with free ski guides. They make it easy to clean up after your dog and enjoy safe, pet-friendly entertainment!
