Best Dog Friendly Cities In Us
To conduct this study, we first identified the cities to be included based on the availability of data for the top 50 cities in all three size categories:
Dog-friendly Nyc: Visiting New York City With A Dog
Ranking a small city (such as Waco, TX) versus a large city (eg, Chicago, IL) is like comparing apples to oranges because it’s important to get a range of city sizes. Each level of city size has very different access to facilities, exercise options, and costs (discussed below).
Dog Parks (0 to 100 points): We obtained data on dog parks from the Trust for Public Land website. We used ParkServe’s search function to pull data from the 150 cities we surveyed to arrive at their index score by calculating the number of dog parks per capita.
Dog Friendly Trails (0 to 100 points): Trail information found on the hiking and trail website AllTrails. I specifically searched the city to get data for this value, setting the filter to “dog friendly trails”.
Dog-Friendly Hotels (0 to 100 points): We used Google Travel to find dog-friendly hotels in each city and calculated a score based on the city’s population size.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants (0 to 100 points): BringFido.com’s directory helped us find dog-friendly restaurants in each city, and then we counted them per capita.
Dog Friendly Rentals (0 to 100 points): We mine rental data using Realtor.com to find the most up-to-date information on available dog-friendly homes and apartments for rent in each city. We calculate the data per capita (100,000 inhabitants).
Pet Sitters (0 to 100 points): We used the SitterCity Directory to determine the number of dog sitters available per capita in each city.
Cost of dog insurance (from 0 to 100 points): We collect data on dog insurance rates by searching the Figo website. We standardized the data by creating a compound dog with constant insurance rate (male, two years, 90% reimbursement, $500 deductible with $5,000 benefit).
New Data Reveals The Best U.s. Cities For Dog-loving Singles
These cities are the best of all states for dog ownership. They have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to allowing dogs access to public spaces, renting apartments and hotels to dog owners, paying insurance costs and more. Keeping your dog healthy requires regular exercise, regular vet visits, the right type of puppy essentials, and a safe home for your puppy to thrive in.
Access to dog parks is the best way for dogs to socialize and exercise, which is important for their well-being. The next best city, Boise, has nearly twice as many dog parks per capita as Idaho, and Alexandria, Va., is the top competitor.
Boise leads the pack with the best dog trails per 100,000 residents. AllTrails lists 9,778 dog trails in the United States, including 105 in Boise alone. Access to safe and fun outdoor spaces is great for your dog’s physical and mental health.
Pet-friendly hotels indicate a general dog-friendly culture within a community. It’s also great for travelers who plan to travel with pets. Metairie, LA came out on top with a total of 97 pet-friendly hotel options, which is quite a lot for a population of just 142,000.
Survey Reveals The Friendliest Cities In America
Like pet-friendly hotels, dog-friendly restaurants generally speak to a community that includes both service pets and non-service pets. Dogs’ ability to participate in local spaces means less time spent alone at home and increased socialization and entertainment. Orlando, Florida, is an outlier, with 379 pet-friendly restaurants.
The inability to find pet-friendly rental properties is a huge stress for many dog owners or potential dog owners. That’s not a problem in Chicago, though, where 437.80 dog-friendly apartment rents per 100,000 residents. Windy City residents should have little trouble finding a good apartment for their pets.
Leaving the city or state can be difficult if you don’t have a reliable pet sitter. Knowing that there are high quality, professional and reliable pet sitting options is a relief for pet owners. Jersey City, NJ and Yonkers, NY have the highest pet sitting rates, accounting for much of the tri-state area.
In addition to the different costs associated with owning dogs, pet insurance can vary greatly depending on where you live. Knowing that you will need to calculate this cost over the lifetime of your dog will help you budget, but keep the cost reasonable in the event of a major health issue or emergency. Tulsa, OK has the lowest pet insurance rates on our list, but several Texas cities are also in the top 10.
The 10 Most Pet-friendly Cities For Renters In The Us
The cost of pet insurance varies by breed and age. But why is there such a price range between American cities? A healthy 2-year-old golden retriever insured in Albuquerque, New Mexico would cost about $22.83/month, while a similar dog in New York City would cost about $62.35/month.
The main reason pet insurance varies between cities is due to varying veterinary costs and the overall cost of living in the city. As the cost of living increases, so does the cost of renting or leasing a veterinary clinic building, hiring veterinary staff, costs of supplies, and other related costs. This makes sense, but it significantly increases the cost of owning dogs in many large US cities, and potential owners must pay additional costs over the life of the pet.
