Dog Friendly Motel Yeppoon

Dog Friendly Motel Yeppoon

Dog Friendly Motel Yeppoon – Yeppoon, the hub of the game, is a great place for a dog-friendly beach. Located 30 minutes from Rockhampton and less than 8 hours north of Brisbane, take your dog to Yeppoon, Queensland and discover what it has to offer.

One of the main attractions of the Yeppoon and Game Coast is the beautiful beaches between Yeppoon and Emu Park in the south.

Fortunately, the standard rule for local Livingston County beaches is that dogs are off-leash on all beaches and before 8 a.m. and after 4 p.m., unless otherwise noted. That’s why almost all beaches in the area are dog-friendly!

In my research, although there are beaches in Byfield National Park further north, I haven’t seen any beaches that don’t allow dogs.

During my visit in 2021, a local tourism website stated that dogs are not allowed on Main Beach, Emu Park Beach and Kui Be Beach. However, I can confirm that there are regular dogs at Kooi Bay Beach before 8am and after 4pm, but no sign of it at Yeppoon Main Beach or Emu Park Beach. The latter two dogs are probably allowed away from patrol areas.

There are two beaches with different rules: Farnborough Beach in Bungle and Fisherman’s Beach in Emu Park. Both beaches allow dogs to relax during the day, but not on weekends and holidays.

Farnborough Beachfront is located between the Bangaley boat ramp and Barwell’s Creek, easily accessible from the 4WD highway on Hinge Avenue. It starts at Fisherman’s Wharf, 150 meters north of the pier, and is allowed to go out to sea until this point.

Although crocodiles are rare in the south, crocodiles can be a threat during the summer months and should be looked for during the turtle nesting season between October and March. If there are turtles nearby, keep your distance and keep dogs calm or away from the beach altogether.

Besides visiting the beer beaches, consider these great ideas for a dog-friendly Yeppoon holiday…

One of the highlights of a visit to Yeppoon is a trip over Great Keppel Island. With beautiful beaches, swimming and ice cream, it’s a great day out for all the family, luckily dogs can join you.

There are two ferry options for traveling to Great Keppel Island, both dog-friendly. We traveled with Keppel Connections, which carries dogs for free. We don’t need to anchor our mouths like a ferry to a magnetic island.

There are also large Freedom Fast cats that charge $5 for small dogs and $10 for large dogs. Both boats take 30 minutes and run on the same schedule.

When you visit Great Keppel Island, you will notice that there are no signs on the beaches about whether or not dogs are allowed. However, the island is part of the Livingstone Shire, like Yeppoon, so other conditions apply, except that dogs are allowed on the beaches and before 8am and after 4pm. There is no mention of Great Keppel Island on the website.

The ferry drops you off at the sands of Rybaki Beach in the middle of the island. I recommend going to the south end of the beach where the closest beaches like Shelving Beach start.

Shelving Beach is one of the most popular snorkeling beaches on the island and is definitely easy to visit if you don’t have your own boat. It’s a 5-10 minute walk, although the last part of the hike is pretty tough, especially if you’re like us! There are reefs on both sides of the sea. We chose the area on the left, which is easier to access when the tide is out.

Holidaying With Dogs

If you bring your own picnic lunch, I recommend walking along Shelving Beach, Monkey Beach, and Long Beach. Monkey Beach is said to have better ice cream, but we didn’t have enough time to visit. But we arrived at Long Beach, a beautiful, long and quiet swimming beach. We have a great beach to ourselves (and the dog to run). The eastern part is actually a nude beach, but it was empty when we visited.

Be aware that the footpaths around Great Keppel Island are not well maintained and the main resort on the island has been closed for many years. It is best to stick to the trails that start at the end of Fisherman’s Beach or ask the locals for directions.

If you take the Keppel Connection ferry to the island, you can add food and drinks to Great Keppel Island’s hidden gems. It’s reasonably priced and our burgers and chips are delicious. However, if you want to get the most out of exploring the island, a stroll to the bistro at the northern end of Fisherman’s Beach takes a lot of time.

The bistro at Great Keppel Island Gideaway is mostly alfresco and dog-friendly, with plenty of water bottles. On my way out, I noticed that the dogs were not allowed to cross the sign, but I didn’t know what area it belonged to.

Unfortunately, most accommodation on Great Keppel Island does not allow dogs, so it is best to visit this place only on a day trip. If you’re planning to stay a night or two, check to see if the vacation home currently allows dogs.

If you want to enjoy the area’s beautiful coastline without putting your feet in the sand, Yeppoon Beach is a popular walk with people and dogs. Take your time, there are plenty of picnic benches and sunbeds along the way, not to mention plenty of dog-friendly beach front cafes.

Dogs must be on a lead and there are plenty of litter box and poo bag reminders to pick up after your dog. Note that dogs are not allowed in the Yeppoon Lagoon (but you can walk behind it) and the Keppel Kraken water park.

Unfortunately, other coastal hikes, such as the Bluff Point Scenic Walk and the Fan Rock Lookout Trail, are located in smaller areas of Game Coast National Park.

Emu Park, Yeppoon Caravan Park

Emu Park is located just 15 minutes south of Yeppoon. Along with Fisherman’s Beach, there are two historical monuments. On the hill above the pier is a statue of Captain Cook, The Famous Ship, erected in 1970. Hear it sing while the wind blows.

The new Anzac Memorial Walk next to the Song Boat. This memorial and small beach were built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War and are a great place to visit. Beneath the large shelter are information panels relating to major battles, as well as the involvement of local Queenslanders.

Dogs are welcome on board and in the surrounding park, but please respect the area.

If you are interested in history, you should visit inland Rockhampton. Central is one of Queensland’s oldest towns and is home to an impressive collection of historic buildings.

Some notable buildings to check out are the Custom House, the Criterion Hotel, Rockhampton Post Office and several courthouses. Many historic buildings are located on the Key Street waterfront, with the post office and courthouse within a block on East Street.

The riverside along Quay Street has recently been redeveloped and is a lovely place for a stroll along the Fitzroy River with shady trees. Keep your dog.

Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in Rockhampton’s main botanic garden and adjacent free zoo. However, head to Kershaw Gardens in North Rockhampton, where dogs are welcome.

The highlight of the gardens is the waterfall area, with several man-made waterfalls flowing beautifully into the pool below, surrounded by palm trees. Waterfall Square, close to High Street car park.

Unfortunately, some parts of the garden, such as the wetlands, still need to be restored after the storm caused severe damage to the gardens.

Dogs are allowed in Kershaw Gardens. There is a dog area next to the Dowling Street car park that I didn’t get a chance to check out, and the Charles Street car park has a small fenced in area with flexible equipment.

There is one dog park in the Yeppoon area, Olive Dore Park on Clayton Road in Lammermoor. There are three separate protected areas that contain river equipment. The other two areas have plenty of shade and seating.
