I found that most of the articles on their website recommend positions, experiences and products that the authors have not tested with their dogs. When the website asked me to include events in New York City that Lucy and I had never been to, it just wasn’t right.

Searching all the places we’ve been would take up a lot of space! You can take the dog-friendly subway or take a taxi or a ride-sharing service like Via or Uber, which is dog-friendly. It’s a good idea to ask the driver if it’s okay with your dog in the car before you get in, but everyone told us yes! So, if you want to bring your dog to New York, you can easily do so. Via was new to me, but what we like about them is that they usually ship a large 10 passenger trailer, so there was plenty of room for a large dog like Lucie.
Of course, New York City is also very walkable! You can only tell by the temperature and how much exercise the dog does. A good idea is to test the temperature of the pavement with your bare feet. If you can’t handle it for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog and you need to get in the car.
A great way to travel with your pup is to check out dog-friendly hotels and dog-friendly amenities. You can find great dog friendly hotels on websites like www.petswelcome.com where there are many to choose from. Lucy loved jumping into the king size bed at the Rivington Hotel (our friends at WTFrenchie stayed there the week we were in town). The hotel allows two dogs per room, so it’s a great option if you’re traveling with a small group! The best thing about this hotel is that it’s within walking distance of several of the most dog-friendly bars in town! support East Village is dog friendly in the bar and back garden. Be prepared to get lots of attention from other dog-loving patrons while enjoying a beer from their extensive selection.

Next time we’re in NYC Lucy and I will have to check out the Soho Grand Hotel, WTFrenchie was there too! It features a pet-friendly area and a dedicated rooftop dog park designed by Oprah’s favorite garden designer, Rebecca Cole. The hotel goes above and beyond for your child with organic treats, bedding, water and food bowls and doggy bags. The best part? No pet fee!
Another option when visiting the Big Apple with your dog is to do what we did and head to Brooklyn, where you can pick up dog-friendly hotels. Lucy and I stayed at a uniform hotel within walking distance of Prospect Park. The house is small but has hardwood floors and is great for a dog friendly home!
One of the highlights of our entire trip was free time in Prospect Park from 5-9am and 9-9am. Dogs of all shapes and sizes cool off on the grass along the mile-long park. There’s even a dog beach in the park if your kids want to swim! Lucy had to stay cute, so there was no beach for her!
This reminds me that as much as we all love our dogs, dog urine killing weeds is unlikely to be a huge inconvenience. Especially if you like to maintain a well-kept garden with lush lawns! In the summer it was easy to eat with your dog in New York City. Almost every neighborhood has a sidewalk cafe. A great restaurant to take your dog to is Bluestone Road on the Upper East Side, right across from the Central Park entrance. Lucy and I went there with our group and requested a table for 5 girls and 7 dogs and surprisingly they accommodated us!
Like Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, Central Park welcomes dogs from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. After enjoying some of the most famous parks in the country (and taking a photo with Natalie Siebers), we headed to the Blue Rock Trail for its famous Monster Ball and endless water bottles for the dogs. The cafe has plenty of shade in the sidewalk area and is located on a very wide sidewalk, so dogs have plenty of shade and privacy to enjoy their visit.

We started under the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO, where we saw lots of tourists taking pictures on the beautiful cobblestone streets. From there we walked through Brooklyn Bridge Park, where there was entertainment and several ice cream parlors. Continue south along the water for stunning views. The Pier 6 dog run is at the end of your walk in case your pup needs a chance to stretch his legs off the leash before calling it a night.
Here are some essentials for your urban getaway with dogs. Pack at least one collapsible container and take it with you wherever you go. It’s easy to fill up at a water fountain or sidewalk cafe.
You can also bring dog food from home. Pack enough for several days in something like Kurgo’s kibble carrier, which holds five pounds of food. Lucy’s back is full of Stella and Chewy’s raw mix!
Another thing you’ll want to pack for your trip is a pair of socks. The sidewalks are hot in the summer, salty in the winter, and the city streets tend to be a bit dirty. I’ve used Pause before. They’re easy to use and disposable, so you can throw them away after your ride and use a new set for your next adventure.
