The Central Coast is home to several national parks with great hiking, unfortunately for dogs. Instead, for dog walkers in the Midwest, I recommend heading to Strickland State Forest.

Dogs are allowed to visit this state forest with you, 10 minutes’ drive north of Gosford. Until recently, dogs had to stay under your control only in state forests, so they were often left behind. However, recent regulations state that dogs must be kept and controlled.

One of the most popular hiking trails is the Arboretum trail. This 2.3 mile walk passes through the Old Australian Arboretum, a collection of native and exotic trees including giant Australian red cedars, Bunia pines and HoopPines. On the way, you pass a beautiful swing bridge.
This hiking trail is very easy, although it can be very muddy after the rains and puddles are dangerous in wet weather. For a longer hike, you can also follow the 1.3 km Bellbird Trail from this trail, which is 3.6 km. The trail starts at the lower Stoney Creek parking lot.
Strickland State Forest contains several hiking trails, approximately 2 km long, although they can be joined together to form longer trails. Another popular short hike in the forest is the Strickland Trail.
This walk starts at the Banksia Picnic car park, deep in the forest. You pass through a variety of landscapes, from high-altitude heather to rainforest, as you descend into the fall. Note that this method has been implemented because it is not suitable.

The last road in the state forest is not closed. It is generally good for 2WD vehicles, but after heavy rain I would advise against going down to the lower Stoney Creek parking lot on the trail. However, the Banksia Picnic car park, where this walk starts, is reached by a relatively moderate road of 1.5 kilometers which is rarely affected by rain.
You don’t have to go deep into the middle of the country to enjoy a dog walk in the woods with your pooch. A beautiful but easy trail can be found at Norah Head, the Norah Head Nature Trail.
There are two car parks to start this walk: the Norah Head Lighthouse car park, which can be very busy on sunny weekends, or the large car park near Bush Street Reserve on the other side. Please please keep the dog.
The 800 meter path is well maintained and easy to follow, with signs along the way showing the different types of plants and the importance of different types of plants. There are also two whale-watching sites on the road: one in the middle and one at Bush Street Reserve.

The tour usually ends with a walk along the beach and rocks to Norah Head Lighthouse. However, dogs are not allowed on the beaches on the Central Coast unless designated as off-leash beaches, and I saw at least one no-dogs sign next to the main beach at Norah Head. Instead, I suggest retracing your steps.
However, no matter which nature trail you start with, I recommend extending your trip to Norah Head Lighthouse. The white structure is beautiful, plus the head gives a nice view of the surrounding coast. Another 300m walk in each direction to the end of the reservoir.
One of the longest walking paths in the world is the lakeside walk. This 7.6km trail lives up to its name, skirting the shores of Lake Tuggerah before crossing the town to enter.
Considering that dogs are not allowed on the 2nd leg, and the 3rd one is not fun, I recommend that if you go on the trail with a dog, you only go through stages 1 and 4 and return the same way. This easy dog walk is about 3.8 km each way and will take about 2.5 hours. There are signs and maps along the way.

Until 2020, pelicans are fed every day at 3:30 p.m. in Memorial Park. Today a new, eco-friendly experience is planned, but you can see many pelicans congregating during the traditional feeding time every afternoon. Be sure to keep your dog away from the pelicans and all the lines.
Long Jetty Suburbs takes its name from the long jetty that juts out into Tuggerah Lake from the outskirts of the town. Originally built in 1914 but rebuilt after a storm in 1927, the pier predates the city.
The longest point is one of three on this part of Lake Tuggerah, but it’s still the longest at 1152 meters, or 351 m. alone. Although it would have been better without the westerly wind on the day we visited!
There is easy parking and facilities along the long jetty, including picnic and wooden benches. In addition, there is a covered toilet with an interesting mural on the pier’s history and environment.

In 2021, the beautiful 200m long promenade connecting Terrigal Beach and Terrigal Haven, which juts out in front of the cliffs, is complete. Fortunately, dogs can join you on the beach, which connects parts of this beautiful coastal walk in Terrigal.
Start anywhere on Terrigal Beach, such as the walk that starts at the North Esplanade, opposite Painters Lane. Now follow the walkway to the platform and swing over the Haven.
Follow the path past the ferry and car park around Terrigal Haven. Most of the mountain meadows are designated as off-leash dog parks, so you can let your dog off the hook. Just be aware of the limited capacity as it is not reserved and there is parking nearby.
If you haven’t gone over Skillion, I recommend you finish the next comment. Otherwise, continue through the path past the parked cars (with the dog back in front) and follow the steps to Skillion. It’s quite a climb, but the view from the top is great. Be careful of the sea during migration.

Then retrace your steps to Terrigal Beach. It is also possible to complete this route starting at Terrigal Haven, starting or finishing at Skillion, thanks to the large car park that makes this place easy to park.
One of the dog beaches on the Central Coast is located between Copacabana Beach and McMasters Beach. This long stretch of beach is a great place to walk your dog.
The outer part of the beach starts in the middle of Copacabana beach, south of the controlled stage, where it reaches about 230 Del Monte. It then continued south to about halfway up McMasters Beach, stopping again just before the controlled phase.

The outer part of the beach is 750 meters long, which makes for a nice walk, it’s best not to overdo it. Between the two lagoons is the mouth of Cockrone Lagoon. Dogs usually enjoy wading in the lagoon, but watch out for dirt after rain. Dogs are also not allowed in the lagoon area away from the beach.

Another state forest with hiking trails near the Central Coast is Olney State Forest. It is a 40-minute drive northwest of Tuggerah, down Morrisett Road.
This state forest also has unsealed roads, which are generally maintained in good condition and suitable for 2×4 vehicles. However, if you have a 2×4 vehicle, skip it after heavy rain or if you don’t like driving on unpaved roads.
A great dog walk is the Pines Walking Track. The trail starts at the Pines picnic area (not near the Pines Campground). The 1.7 mile trail follows Dora Creek, passing through the mouth of eucalyptus forests and rainforest, passing beautiful pools along the way. Allow 45 minutes for the ride.
Note that the Abbotts Falls Hiking Trail is not exactly dog-friendly, as part of the trail goes through the Point Trail through Watagans National Park, where dogs are not allowed.
