It’s no secret that Colorado hikers love their dogs. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of trails in Colorado that are open to dogs, but with so many options to choose from, it can be difficult to narrow down and choose a hike. This list includes 20 dog-friendly hikes in Colorado that I’ve personally taken with my dog, Beckett.
Since moving to Colorado in 2016, I’ve spent my weekends hiking in the mountains during the summer and fall, so I’ve gained a lot of experience navigating Colorado’s hiking trails. This is by no means an exhaustive list of dog-friendly adventures in Colorado, but I’ve done my best to include a good portion of the state’s best trails of varying difficulty levels.
With so many hikers and dogs on the trails in Colorado, it’s important that everyone does what they can to minimize their impact on the environment. Here are some important tips to keep in mind when hiking with your dog in Colorado.

All of the Colorado dog adventures on this list are on public land. However, different jurisdictions have different laws regarding fraud. Some national forests and wilderness areas specifically require dogs to be on leashes, while others require dogs to be “under control” (meaning on a leash or under loud noise control). Some places, like Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, have unique programs that include hearing and seeing dog tags. Follow the laws where you hike to keep trails open for dogs.
If your dog does not have the ability to recall, you must keep him on a leash at all times. You should always have a leash handy when walking your dog or letting him swim if you encounter other dogs or small children who know how to swim. Remember, keeping your dog on a leash during walks can help prevent negative wildlife encounters and keep your dog safe.

Ultimately, it is your responsibility as a dog owner to know and obey the laws that apply. Trails are usually well signed and warn when a leash is required, but rules and regulations can change at any time. When in doubt, use the thread!
ALWAYS remember to pick up and bag pet waste when walking your dog in Colorado. Pet waste is considered a biohazard and is usually packaged by law.
Do not leave bags of excrement on the side of the road. Even if you’re willing to go back, it’s technically rubbish and encourages other people who don’t have the same intentions. Take pet waste with you to the driveway and dispose of it properly.
