While there are many ways to explore the Northwoods, some of the most extensive and accessible routes are the region’s spectacular railroads. These abandoned railways, which have become popular for hiking, biking and snowshoeing, are by their very nature easily accessible from many routes. They are mostly flat with gradual changes in elevation, but pass through beautiful countryside, over scenic lakes, rivers and wetlands. Choose between the Bearskin State Trail, which runs from Minocqua to Harshaw; the Hiawatha Trail, which connects to the end of the Bearskin State Trail and continues south to SARA Park in Tomahawk; The Three Eagles Trail, which has two sections – one at Three Lakes and the Eagle River – is linked by 1.5 miles of country roads; or the Watersmeet/Land O’ Lakes Trail, from County B in Land O’ Lakes to the Stateline Trail near Roundhouse Road in Watersmeet, Michigan.
