Of course, if we’re planning a camper trip, since Ella came into our lives, we’ve found dog-friendly campsites, and perhaps most importantly, as part of that plan, we’re “dogs.”

These are few, but it’s important to learn from your mistakes and check ahead. Major booking sites like Cool Camping and PitchUp have filters to remove sites that are not suitable for dogs. Many campgrounds will tell you on their website if dogs are allowed, and if not, you can always call and ask.
One of the things I love about Ella’s life is that it forces us to look around. Almost all campgrounds have a “dog on lead” policy (which is awesome!). But the rest of us are active people who need to let loose at least twice a day, and that means finding a safe place to do it.
Luckily, camping and wilderness go hand in hand, and we find hidden gems in the campground.
Before booking a campsite, we check Google Maps to know the location of the site. We see forests or commons marked by rivers or footpaths. Many of the campsites are on or near farms, so we make sure that Ella can be kept away from livestock and crops while she is at the front.

It’s worth checking whether local attractions and activities are dog-friendly, as well as cafes, restaurants and pubs you’ll want to visit.
This is especially important if you are going on a beach holiday in Devon or Cornwall. You can spend years looking for the perfect campsite near a beautiful beach, only to find out that your dog is not allowed on that beach.
In our experience, it’s worth checking in advance or your trip could be thrown out the window. On the contrary, you will be surprised. We recently managed to hire a boat to take Ella up the Wye. I never thought it would happen!
Finally, in our opinion (but harder to come by) is a camping site with a shaded area. Being somewhere cool makes Ella (if we’re supposed to be fake) more comfortable.

It is very useful to ask about this. Many campgrounds will host if available and reserve if you have a shady spot.
So, with that in mind, here are the 5 best dog camps in England and Wales. They don’t tick all the boxes, but they’re sites we’ll be returning to with Ella…
Peaceful and spacious location close to the North Devon coast. Dogs on leads are welcome, but as this is a working farm, pets should be treated with care. The campsite is very friendly, has good facilities and a nice local farm shop. It’s also close to Woolacombe Beach, which is dog-friendly (except for a small section) and has endless dunes to explore.
If your dog wants to let off steam before breakfast, walk to the camp entrance and you’ll see a small trail on your right. Follow this path (on the road) and it will lead you over a bridge into a quiet forest. We didn’t see another soul there!

It’s a spacious, calm, unbranded place in the middle of a lake. There are countless swimming spots in the area and there is a small forest near the village. All the cafes and coffee shops we visited in town are dog friendly and there is plenty to see in the area. The only thing to watch out for in the lake district is the possibility of blue-green algae in some lakes. It’s dangerous for dogs (and not good for humans), so check before you go in. Cheap and fun camping on a working farm. Even if it’s a working farm, dogs on leads are welcome. What we love about this site is how simple it is. It’s basically an area with a Park Where You Want program. Close to Glastonbury (a dog-loving town as we found out – Ella didn’t pay much attention). So, it’s easy to walk on the Tor and get close to West Lydford’s swimming spots.
If your dog wants to let off steam before breakfast… turn right and after a few minutes you will come to the footpath on the right. This is the beginning of a network that will cut off agricultural land. Remember that there are sometimes wild animals in the fields near the road.
Best Dog-friendly Hotels In The Lake District
This large, open mountain campground is one of our favorites. We discovered this a few years ago when a group of friends were looking for a place to get away. We want to light a campfire, have a drink or two, and not worry about disturbing other people. Celtic Camping is the perfect place for this – there are plenty of off-the-beaten path sites and a direct beach walk from the campsite. The sea view is amazing too! If you want to immerse yourself in civilization, St. Davids is just minutes away.

It’s a bit of a mystery… it’s actually a pub with a small cottage in the North Wales countryside. We stumbled upon this place as our trip to Snowdonia was cut short and we decided to stay in the low country instead. This pub is traditional, laid back, good food, very dog friendly and serves dog beer and dog sausages! The campsite is reasonably priced with everything you need. Although it deviated from our original plans, we found the North East corner of Wales to be a great place to visit.
