Living in Phoenix and having family in Southern California means that we have many trips to the area under our belts. We have family in various cities in Southern California and visit as often as possible. We like to take dogs with us, and even if we have a family, sometimes we need more space than they can provide, or the house will not work well for dogs on long trips with us. Chance and Kona are always out for dog walks. There are many nice walks where you can take your dogs on a leash, but only a few beaches. We like to go to the beach or the shopping center. San Clemente has a long stretch of beautiful shops on Avenida Del Mar and if you walk you will walk to the beach.
However, the dog beach is a different experience. We always visit when we are in town with the dogs. A couple of the most visited are Rosie’s Dog Beach in Long Beach or Huntington Dog Beach. A little further south, Del Mar Beach has a place for dogs to play.
The Basic Rules
If you haven’t been there, I recommend bringing a long leash so your dog can play unless you know he won’t try to swim to Catalina Island! Don’t forget to bring fresh water and towels to the car to clean it as much as possible after the game!

“Greater Palm Springs” includes eight cities in addition to Palm Springs: Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, LaQuinta, Indio and Coachella. Tourism is the biggest area for local business. I would love to stay in Palm Springs and explore this other city by car. Palm Desert has a great outdoor market and can be great for Indio/Coachella photo ops or if you’re attending a festival (without your dog).
We have visited many dog friendly places and when I say Palm Springs is the most dog friendly town we have ever visited – I mean it! It’s hard to explain, but there’s just a sense of satisfaction everywhere we go with Ruby, and hopefully from this general guide.
The weather in Palm Springs is undoubtedly very good, but there are times that are considered the best to visit – winter and early spring. Palm Springs feels especially in the winter, which is November-January, because while the rest of the country struggles with cold and snow, Palm Springs shines with sunshine and 65-75 degrees.
When traveling to Palm Springs with your dog, I do not recommend visiting anytime after March. Unless your plan is to just be by the pool the entire time during your visit. Summer temperature is usually around 100℉ and can reach 115°, humidity is less than 10%.
Pet Friendly Hotel Del Mar / San Diego
Living in Palm Springs and the surrounding desert is an absolute delight and one of my favorite things about visiting this city. I’m a big fan of mid-century modern architecture and desert luxury, so I just rent hotels and apartments in Paradise and travel around the area.
If you want to stay in downtown Palm Springs, there are several dog-friendly hotels around Palm Canyon Dr. and Indian Canyon Dr., which is ideal for walking to shops and restaurants.
