The Yarra Valley is Victoria’s beautiful wine region, just an hour’s drive from Melbourne. It is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. As Melbourne residents, we have visited the Yarra Valley several times with our small dog. We always have a hard time traveling with dogs. But then Helen from Pooches and Pinot Wine Tours contacted us for a bespoke wine tour of the Yarra Valley after reading our blog post about South Australia’s dog-friendly wine regions. His friendliness and attention to detail in customizing our experience convinced us to try one of their wine tours. Taking the Pooches and Pinot Degustation wine tour we realized how dog-friendly the Yarra Valley really is and fell in love all over again with this beautiful wine region.
Pooches and Pinot is a small wine tour company founded by Jeff and Helen, the two amazing guys behind the operation. They do it all, from creating personalized itineraries, welcoming guests, and transporting guests and their pets to dog-friendly wineries in the Yarra Valley. They offer half-day, full-day and degustation tours with optional pick-up and drop-off within a 75km radius of the Yarra Valley at an additional cost (Yarra Valley pick-up and drop-off is free). They are the only dog-friendly wine tour company currently operating in the Yarra Valley and their love for the community shows when you tour with them.
We took the tasting tour, where we visited five wineries and tasted different wines with different foods at each stop. All of the wineries we visited were completely dog friendly; When the weather wasn’t good, we were welcomed inside the cellar door or in a covered area. Pooches and Pinots The Mercedes van (there are two; we went on a smaller one) has plenty of room for dogs in the front and back. Pooches and Pinots provides dog beds, harnesses, tennis balls and snacks for dogs (and people). We chose to get the dog car seat and use it ourselves, but you can discuss all this with Helen before the trip.
Things To Do In Yarra Valley
Our tour guide Jeff (also co-owner of Pooches and Pinot) was very friendly, communicative, passionate and knowledgeable. My new wine partner had so much fun learning more about wine and truly appreciating its complexity. Fun fact: Jeff is also a singer-songwriter, so if you’re a fan of ’70s and ’80s music, ask him to play your CDs; We enjoyed talking about all things music in the car.
Our first stop was Rob Dolan’s Vince, who perfectly illustrated what was to come. This winery is absolutely gorgeous and makes a perfect wedding venue (any dog parents out there who want to get married at a winery!?) The wonderful staff here not only made us feel welcome, but treated the little ones with warmth and hospitality. We were served a unique breakfast pastry platter paired with four wines specially for pooches and Pinot Cruz. The course included buttery croissants with sparkling wine, a famous chardonnay with sweet mussels, a fruity Danish pinot gris and a beautiful Danish cherry pinot noir.
But more importantly, this winery had everything we needed, and not just dog-friendly (like so many places that claim to be dog-friendly these days). These are some of the main titles:
At our second stop, Mandala Wines, we are greeted by the owner, Charles, who personally conducts most of the wine tasting. We were offered wine tasting indoors (yes, you can bring your well-behaved dog inside) or outdoors. Here we had a hearty board with delicious displays of delicious meats, pickles/olives and breadsticks made in house with ingredients grown at the winery or nearby farms. It pairs perfectly with some of the best wines we’ve had this year. We discovered that we are big fans of cool climate red wine. We loved the wine here so much that we bought a few bottles to bring home. There is a nice restaurant with outdoor seating for those who want to have lunch. Mandala Wines is the perfect destination for those who want to dive deeper into the world of winemaking.
Pooches & Pinot
We stopped at Steel’s Gate for lunch and were greeted by the lovely owner, Brad. We sat on the porch overlooking the vineyard (completely covered with cafe curtains, making it a dog-friendly place to dine in any weather). Ollie and the Winks are greeted with a generous heart and a bowl of fresh water. Here we had a three course lunch with a selection of wines by the bottle followed by a wine tasting. The lunch was as fresh as all of the winery’s produce, and each ingredient was bursting with wonderful color and flavor. This wine was amazing, and as someone with a scientific background, I was very interested in Brad’s inspiration for a scientific approach to winemaking and the focus on what he does at Stills Gate.
Payten & Jones is a small, quaint cellar door serving wine with a modern twist, located across the street from the world-famous Four Pillars Gin. If you like fun places with graffiti, wine and great atmosphere to spend time with your kids, this is your place. We were treated to a range of house wine and Spanish vermouth tastings – they are exclusive importers of Fot-Lee Vermouth – and a delicious local cheese plate (another Pouches and Pinot special) that Ollie couldn’t quite put his finger on. away from
Our last stop was the O’Craigo ferry, where we had a unique experience where we tasted the most famous five.
