Take your animals to the countryside, past farms, plantations and the banks of the Kaveri River. Pet friendly has a new address – Aurika Coorg by Lemon Tree Hotels. Last week, my husband Sharath and our dogs Raju and Aisha traveled to Aurika Coorg, a pet-friendly resort in Coorg nestled among 45 acres of rainforest and coffee plantations in the Western Ghats. The dogs were surprised by what they saw and experienced. Lush green space, plenty of space to run and do, unlimited treats and toys, delicious food and comfort food. If only they could write this review, maybe they would have had a very interesting experience, but here is my perspective as a recent pet parent and traveler to this lovely pet friendly resort in Coorg. First, a little background on being new pet parents. A few years ago, when COVID suddenly took over our lives and the first lockdown began, my husband and I joined a community of pet lovers to feed Indie’s dogs on the streets. And that’s how we found a very cute bunch of puppies lost in the park without their mother. They were only a few weeks old and we took turns feeding them. One of them was a strong and playful puppy, which one of our friends immediately named Raja, as is every dog’s favorite name.

Raju grew more evil by the day and soon became the happy but powerful Alpha of the pack. Unfortunately, tragedy struck and the six-month-old baby reportedly suffered a fractured spine and was beaten up by some hooligans in the middle of the night. A very smart boy, Raju was half-blind and in a lot of pain – most vets said he should be put down. Eventually one of them agreed to the surgery and we brought him home with the hope that one day he would be able to walk and run like normal dogs. But two years later, although he can stand and walk a little, he still half-stutters and complains, but runs in a wheelchair he bought for himself. Raju is a bit of a traveler who has been to beaches and jungles and now he is on vacation in the mountains. Her little sister Aishu has always been there through and through and she started staying with us in the last few months and this visit was her first from home.

Aurika Coorg talks about friendship with pets. The pet-friendly resort in Coorg has so far housed more than 95 dogs and cats, including 30 Indian dogs. Many pet-friendly resorts patronize India and love cute and cuddly breeds. They also have several limitations. Aurika Kurga, however, was having none of that, even though she should have been comfortable outdoors and in the pet cafe.

Paraplegic dog Raju also has special needs. Although we took him to boutique properties in Ooty and Bangalore and pet-friendly resorts near Bangalore, we were a little concerned about whether he would be comfortable here. But Aurika felt at home in Coorg. “Animals are our guests, and we wear our pet-friendliness on our collar,” said Sanjay Pandita, general manager, who greeted us at the entrance, as you can see on the sign. While we had our welcome drinks, Raju and Aishu served food to welcome them. We even registered them as pets when we booked with specific information.

The rooms had pet beds, food and toys and they loved it. Everything is carefully designed with your pet’s safety and comfort in mind. There were also plates to serve them food and water. Although the food is prepared for the dogs, they can sit with them at certain tables in the restaurant.

The staff treated their pets with such love that Raju and Aisha felt comfortable there. They walked and ran with us, rolled in the grass, sunbathed, chased squirrels and ducks, looked at the vast greenery from the balcony, curled up, slept and dreamed of other adventures.

But Aurika Coorg is much more than just a luxury pet-friendly resort. The aesthetically designed property is spread over 45 hectares and is surrounded by the Western Ghats rainforest, coffee and aromatic plants. Every piece of property tells a story, whether it’s a narrative art installation or the artistic wood used to design some of the furniture. You can go bird watching, nature walks and plantation tours and even try your hand at coffee making.

Birds are literally everywhere—in gardens, plantations, and as art in rooms and hallways. I went birding with Ganesh, an in-house naturalist who has been ‘ThebirdmanofCoorg’ for over two years and is also a great storyteller. In addition to a nature walk, request a tour of the property. I did two leisurely birding tours of the property and saw about 30 species around and within an hour. It was also a form of healing.
