Exploring Southern Utah From Pet Friendly Kanab
Named after the Paiute word for “swamp place,” Kanab, Utah is the perfect base for exploring the wildlife-loving wonders of southern Utah. It offers scenic hikes and hidden canyons, and is an easy drive to three national parks, five national monuments, a national forest, and recreational areas.

Spring and fall are the best times to visit South America for wildlife. However, with 256 days of sunshine a year, it’s a good idea to get plenty of blue skies and sunshine whenever you visit Kanab, Utah.
If you want to avoid the crowds at the national park, plan your trip in the winter, when temperatures in Kanab are in the mid-40s to mid-50s. In fact, the only way to experience Zion Canyon–Zion Park’s attraction is most-with-your-pets is when the park trips are not working. They are only closed during certain times from December to February.
Best Friends Roadhouse & Mercantile
Before it became a tourist attraction, Knapp honed her skills as a hostess who lured actors and film crews to scenic spots. Dubbed “Little Hollywood,” hundreds of movies have been shot in the area since the 1920s, when the area was popular for cowboy movies.
To honor this legacy, the Kanab Walk of Fame now includes more than 90 plaques. For fans of old movies, strolling through town and viewing photos, biographies, and credits from movies and TV shows in Kanab and Kane County is endless fun!

The Roadhouse is located just north of Kanab City, the most haunted hotel we’ve ever seen. And staying there helps support the life-saving mission of Best Friends Animals, located just five miles down the road.
In a world where some “pet-friendly” hotels tolerate pets, we rate Best Friends Road House 16/10 on the pet-friendly scale. It offers a unique experience – the chance to stay in a pet-friendly hotel!
Our room was comfortable with a small kitchen equipped to prepare and serve simple meals and a dining area. The bed was also very comfortable and the bathroom was nice.
But most hotels have comfortable rooms and comfortable beds. What makes Best Friends Roadhouse stand out is how they care for their pets – starting with their policies. No pet fee, no weight restrictions, no breed restrictions, cats are allowed, and up to four pets are allowed per room.

But even that does not make this hotel special. This good thinking keeps your pet healthy.
After a long day in the car, Miles and I were surprised to find that the Roadhouse has two parking spaces! He needs to run and burn off energy. Rod and I went for a long walk in the evening.
The hotel provided dog bowls for Miles in our room, but he much preferred to spit in the outdoor dog market.
She wasn’t too excited to see the spa pets and wash the guests. Fortunately, we didn’t have an incident that required Miles to shower. But it would be very useful for any dog looking for a little pampering.

The next thing we discovered (in addition to the human cookies and dog treats we received at the screening) was that Miles had two dog beds to choose from. Neither are we!
In addition to a good breakfast, the shops offer all kinds of food. They also have pet supplies if you forget to pack something.
What about people who love animals but don’t walk with their pets? The folks at Best Friends Roadhouse will take care of you too! They offer you a choice of dog, cat or rabbit from Best Animal Friends to stay with you. This is a whole new level of friendship!!
As I said, Kanab is very animal friendly and we had no problem finding outdoor food with Miles. With the convenience food, taco truck, and open-top menu, hunger is never a concern.

Just staying at Good Friends Roadhouse is why I have to go back to Kanab. But when you add in pet food options and think about all the things you can do together, this is the ultimate pet-friendly place!
Located just three miles north of downtown Kanab, the 6,000-acre Animal Friends is much more than its name. Founded in 1984, Good Friends has been the leading animal shelter organization in the nation to stop the killing of homeless dogs and cats.
Every day, dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, horses, pigs and other animals reach about 1600. You are invited to walk for free, volunteer to spend time with the animals, or enjoy the unique paths and trails with your pet.
The shelter is open seven days a week, but tours and volunteer opportunities fill up quickly, so sign up now! During our visit we did the Sanctuary Tour, following the tour bus in our car with Miles and listening to the tour guide on the radio. Then we walked the pigs and goats with Miles, protecting him from the pens.

Our next stop is a delicious vegetarian meal at the Angel Village Café. The view from the patio to Angel Canyon will take your breath away!
Finally, Miles and I hit the road! A walk on the 1.3km Angels Overlook Trail took us to the Garden of Gratitude with stunning views of the valley below.

Located just 14 miles west of Kanab, Coral Pink Sand Dunes National Park protects 1,200 acres of rolling dunes! Formed by the winds that pass between the Moquith and Moccasin mountains, it is a truly spectacular sight to see in this area of the country.

Pets are allowed in the park, although walking on the sand can be difficult for dogs and people. Also keep in mind that most of the parking lots are open for OHV use, so be careful with the vehicles when you search. If sand dunes aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other hiking opportunities in Kanab and the surrounding area.
The park also has two playgrounds and a nice picnic area if you want a place to eat.
More than 250 million years of Earth’s geological history can be found in the colorful rocks of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Administered by the Bureau of Land Management, the monument covers approximately 1.9 million acres. The Great Staircase is located outside of Kanab.
