Everyone who heads to Napa Valley is lured by the splendor of the hillside vineyards in St. Helena, Yountville and Healdsburg, and some head north to the sleepy little town of Calistoga. Once a simple country town full of farms, Calistoga is now a hot spot, figuratively and literally, with all the spas and mud baths, thanks to the area’s significant geothermal exposure.
Calistoga is very dog-friendly, with plenty of pet-friendly places to stay, like the Salage Resort (which has a charming patio for alfresco dining) or the Calistoga Motor Lodge and Spa, and we visited ours on our last trip. Really enjoyed the experience. Calistoga.

Murphys is a charming little town in Calaveras County, California (between San Francisco and Stockton) that no one tells you anything about. That’s definitely a good thing, because it’s a great place to go on a weekend with the dogs, but it also has some of the cheapest and most diverse wine you’ll find in California.

We stayed with Babu for the weekend at the charming Courtwood Inn B&B and explored downtown Murphys, a main street with tons of tasting rooms and dog-friendly restaurants.
Some of our notable pet-friendly restaurants are Alchemy Market and Cafe, Grounds, Aria Bakery (you must try their delicious croissants and cookies), and V Restaurant & Bar for live music, which we especially like. Loved it during the rainy weekend. .

In addition to wine tasting, you can stroll through Murphys Community Park (which has a nice bubbling brook) or hike the 17.5-mile Arnold Rim Trail, a popular Calaveras County trail that includes dog trails. Simply put, this low-key city is perfect for a weekend getaway with the dogs.
