As the name suggests, these trees only grow in the eastern parts of the contiguous United States (and parts of Canada).
Tamarack trees in particular grow in the northeastern United States from Minnesota to West Virginia and in Canada from the eastern Yukon to Newfoundland.

If you decide to participate in the “Larch Madness” following the golden colors in the village, you can see the larches at their best for a period of 4-6 weeks.
At the end of October, the larches have dropped a good amount of needles to the ground, but I found individual or small golden larches that can still be photographed until the middle of November when the snow starts.
Although they are not necessarily in the best condition, it is nice to see the golden shells sticking out of the thin layer of snow!

To get the timing right, the best way to determine the location of golden yellow trees in a particular area is to read the Washington Trails Association trip reports for the trail.
The locals are known to leave information there for the next hikers, including how close the larch is to its summit.

Some of the most stunning larch photos are taken on a clear, sunny day, when the larch can be seen against the bright blue sky.
Early morning and about an hour before sunset (which photography enthusiasts call the golden hour) provide a soft light that makes the larches look even more incredible.
Note that most larch hikes are at least 3 miles long, so you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to get back to your car before dark, or bring a flashlight to get through (recommended for experienced hikers only).
