Paso Robles is located in central California between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Red wines are the dominant style, and Cabernet Sauvignon is the star. However, with warm weather and fertile soil, they can grow different types of grapes. The region is also famous for its red and white styles of Rhône wines. So there is wine for every taste. Located in the far south, the wines are generally fruit driven but balanced by the acidity of the cooler nights.
We spent four days exploring the area with our dog Mercy. We found it to be a much more relaxed environment than the famous Napa Valley where dogs are rarely allowed in the wineries. Paso Robles offers dog-friendly wineries lined with patios and watering holes. We were greeted by friendly grape dogs at several wineries. A group of winemakers were thoughtful enough to create an informative website about the area and list dog-friendly wineries in the area. It shows the commitment of Paso Robles to allow our little sweet friends to aim. Winemaker Tom Myers has been making wine for Castro since 1990. He has helped grow the winery from 1,400 acres of vineyards to 40,000 cases a year of multi-barrel production for friends and family. Their signature wine is Zinfandel, but they also have a great variety for every palate.
The tasting room looks casual at first glance, but once you get to the counter, the friendly staff makes wine tasting light and fun. You can bring a picnic or enjoy snacks in the gift shop. There are many patios throughout the grounds to relax with your dog. They also host concerts and events on the grounds. Don’t forget to check out the disc golf course in one of the vineyards.

Hunt Cellars purchased the 550-acre farm from the Hunt family in 1996 and opened a tasting room in 1999. The most fascinating part of Hunt Cellar’s history is winemaker David Hunt. When he was in his 30s, he lost his sight. David was already blind when they bought the farm, but he didn’t let that stop him. He believes his other sensibilities stepped up to compensate, helping him make beautiful wines. Hunt Cellars’ wines have received many accolades, particularly for their Cabernet Sauvignon and Tony Port. Other wines include Syrah, Merlot, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Malbec, and Sauvignon Blanc. Wine bottles age more than most wineries. David only releases the wine when he thinks they are ready to drink.

Hunt Cellars was our favorite taste during our time in Paso Robles. Dogs are allowed in the main tasting room, and any canine friend is welcomed with treats and water at the tasting counter. The staff was happy to share wines and flavors customized to customers’ personal preferences. We were able to try multiple vintages of the same wine, which shows that annual weather patterns and bottle age affect the wine’s taste. The pour is small, but allows you to taste a wide range of wines. We tried 22 wines during our visit. It was amazing!
Justin Winery has been growing and selling grapes from 160 acres of vineyards since 1981. In 1987, they began harvesting grapes for the Justin label. Justin specializes in Bordeaux-style red wines, which are blended from the grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. They are best known for their flagship wines Isoselles and Liquor. In 2000, Wine Spectator magazine named ISOSCELES one of the 10 best wines in the world. There are other types as well. Tempranillo, Malbec, Zinfandel, Cab Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah for red, and Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc for white.
Just a short drive from Paso Robles, Justin Winery is nestled among rolling hills, winding roads and lush greenery. This is a popular winery, but be prepared for a very expensive wine tasting. We recommend sitting in the beautiful courtyard with views of the surrounding vineyards. This is a great place to bring your dog and enjoy a glass of wine. You might even get a chance to meet the divine dog, a friendly yellow lab.

Robert Hall is a great place to spend time with your boyfriend. You can enjoy a glass of wine outside and play many lawn games like giant chess, Jenga and connect cards in the yard. Dogs are also welcome at the check-in counter, and a water bottle is provided.

Sculpterra first started in 1979 with the Frankel family planting 20 acres of pistachios and 20 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. After the success of Cabernet, the Frankels decided to expand the vineyard in 1997 with Zinfandel and Merlot. In 2007 they opened a tasting room. They are known for their Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvedre wines.

Sculpterra is a cross between an art museum and a winery. Robert C. at the front door. Made of wrought iron forged by a resident blacksmith named Bentley. You can find his work around the winery, including the chandelier in the tasting room. There is an outdoor sculpture garden by artist John Jaeger, a professional sculptor. Look around to see his work to see larger than life bronze and granite sculptures of various animals. Many artists are on display in the tasting room and grounds. Bring your dog to see the art. There is a nice outdoor patio with tables where you can hang out and enjoy with your pooch.

Tin City is an industrial park with wineries, breweries and restaurants. The store is located alongside an air conditioning supplier and an auto body repair shop. It’s about 15 minutes south of Paso Robles, which makes it easy to get an Uber and not worry about driving after enjoying something. With more than 20 locations in Tin City, reserve at least one afternoon. We recommend a full day if you plan to bring your dog. Dogs are welcome in most of the tasting rooms and can often be seen playing with the winery dogs. There are plenty of places to hang out with your dog on dog-friendly patios and grab a bite to eat at area restaurants or food trucks.
