If you’re anything like us, you love taking your dog on trips  Last September we took the most amazing road trip to incredible Utah with our two babies, Newton + Maya. I thought I would do a little blog series about our adventure (this is part II of II) and hopefully also if you travel there with your dog.

Well, there are 2 main factors to consider with Utah: (1) Weather + (2) Crowds  As a major tourist destination, it gets busy in the warmer months, so keep that in mind  Also, Utah summers get HAWT  For you and your dog, this might not ideal  We chose to go in mid September and it worked for us  The crowds were still a bit but not as bad as June, July or August  Although it was hot and sometimes hot, not the dead heat of summer  Can we do it in October?  maybe  But we didn’t want it to be too cold, so maybe doing the trip in late September, early October is a nice compromise.

So you’re ready to go on a road trip with your dog?! Maybe you’ve done it before (thanks!), but maybe it’s your first long drive, road trip, and you’re a little nervous. Here’s some information to help you prepare First, make a list of the things your dog/dogs need each day…

And anything else that they can use on a daily basis or that will make them feel more comfortable away from home

Then, divide your baby’s food and treats each day, add them on the days you’re away, and put them in a container or plastic bag for easy transport. Calculate the number of pills/dietary supplements you need per day and add up the number of days and store them in bags/containers for easy transport. Then just pack the water bowl, toys, dog bed or anything else your dog needs and pack the car!

Now let’s get to the good stuff… Where to go in Utah?  Well, for us it’s really hard to pick just one area  If you’ve ever explored Utah, you know it has great parks and destinations throughout the state  You’ll want to see the Moab Arches and Canyonlands to the east, but you’ll also want to check out all the incredible castles in Zion National Park and the southwest/southcentral Utah desert.  Utah has a lot to offer, and if you’re traveling from either side of the country, you’ve come a long way, so you might as well come down.  ]

We decided to take a week long trip (5 nights and 6 days to be exact) to see as much as possible Planning such an extensive trip can be overwhelming, but with a little (actually a lot) research, planning, passion and motivation can you do it! And I hope this blog will help you in your planning So here’s how we break it down

Dog Friendly Hiking Vacations

Since it is home, Denver, CO is our starting point We decided we would include Moab and Zion on our trip even though they are 4+ hours away and on opposite ends of the state. It made sense to do Zion first since it’s the farthest (9.5+ hours from DEN) and there are some incredible slot canyons on the way back from Zion to Moab that we wanted to see as well, so that was the plan. We started our week long trip in Hurricane, UT, just 35 minutes from Zion Then we spent 2 nights there and started driving towards Moab On the way to Moab we stopped in the Kanab, Utah desert where you can find some incredible dog friendly castles canyons. The drive also took us through parts of Arizona, including Lake Powell (which looks amazing and is definitely on our list for our next adventure). Finally we ended up in Moab where we stayed for the rest of the trip and a total of 3 nights The drive home at the end of the vacation was an easy + beautiful 5 hour drive All in all I think we over planned what we set us for You might want to adjust, add, delete, and schedule based on where you’re from, how much time you have, and what you’re most interested in seeing. (If you are short on time, I recommend doing Moab for your entire stay). Here’s a little about the first 2 legs of our trip: Zion and Castle Canyon in the Utah desert. [We are doing a separate blog on Moab, coming soon!]
