Dog Friendly Vacations New Hampshire – We love the New England region, especially New Hampshire and Vermont. Vermont is one of the most dog-friendly states I’ve ever been to. However, a well-planned vacation with the dogs in Vermont and New Hampshire did not turn out as we had planned!
Winter holidays with dogs have had some ups and downs, and I don’t mean on the road. In our experience, you need to have a good plan for a successful vacation with your dog, but you need a plan B just in case life throws you a curve ball and your carefully planned dog vacation falls apart. Destroy!

New Hampshire’s Waterville Valley is a favorite of ours, especially in the winter. Waterville Valley Resort has dog-friendly ski trails. Our dogs love long walks on this trail. It is well maintained and runs alongside a beautiful stream. There are also two beautiful footbridges that you can cross.
We started with a 4 day stay in Waterville Valley, after which we planned to visit Vermont. After the first day, everything was going according to plan, until…!
I ski downhill and my husband skis so we ski too. I was on my first day of skiing and my husband was on his second day.
The first day I skied, it was great! On the second day, it was my husband’s turn to go skiing. That day, I was relaxing in my hotel room with my dog, when I got a call from my husband. He skied for 2 hours and had the time of his life!

My husband seemed a little tired, but he said he wanted to find another way. He planned to ski for another half hour and then ski half an hour later – that’s another hour of skiing and if you’re tired it’s stressful!
Knowing that my husband drives, works, and has accidents, I advise him to “end the day on a high” and go back to the hotel. We had a few days of skiing left and didn’t want to risk injury to either of us on the second day. Of course, my tough husband insisted that he was fine and could easily ski for another hour.
“Honey, can you come down the hall and get the wheelchair?” I said, “What? Why do you need a wheelchair? Why do you need a chair? I need to know.”
Of course he fell and got hurt. He was obviously tired and insisted on continuing skiing.
New Hampshire State Parks Pet Policy
In fact, he could not move at all. He fell and hit his leg and hard thigh. That was when his ski vacation ended and I had to do everything myself. This was the end of our big dog winter vacation planning. The image of him walking with us on the long snowy road changes color rapidly.
My husband didn’t really need a doctor, he just needed his leg treated and rested. For how long, we weren’t sure.
My poor dog spent most of his time in the hotel room with nothing to entertain him and no snow to play with! He has to walk three times a day, including a night walk in the hotel parking lot. I made all the food for the dog, and I had to bring food for my husband and me day and night. None of the romantic restaurant dinners we were expecting. The pet friendly hotel we stayed at did not have room service!
Two days later I had to drive 200 miles to the second resort hotel we planned to stay at. Canceling part of our trip 48 hours before arrival caused us to lose 100% for this hotel, and it wasn’t cheap!
A Dog Friendly Christmas Staycation
And, for better or worse, right? So I took care of my husband and dog and drove 1200 miles home for the next 5 days.
We live in Florida so I decided to let my snow dog have fun in the snow. I was able to find him about 21 miles from our hotel on a dog friendly trail that we always love. John agreed to stay in the car while I drove him for 30 minutes on a nice snowy road. Here’s a short video of an ice walk in a winter wonderland!
