Best Dog Friendly Vacation Spots In New England – We call this ride “Lincoln’s List” because this road was created with our best friend in mind.

Our son, Lincoln, has been traveling with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we fell in love with road trips. In short, riding is the most accessible way for us to travel with her (and we take Lincoln everywhere).

(2) woods, hiking, and lots of time outside (and maybe she means to tell us that areas where there are few people but squirrels and smells are better),

(3) beaches and lakes with easy access, the water can cool her along with the sand and mud in which she can smell the newness, and

So we thought about our travel bucket list and made this trip with Lincoln’s wish list in mind. If you are looking for dog friendly hikes because you have a dog that will do everything you do while hiking, this is for you!

Lincoln takes you to New England on this road trip because the summer and fall temperatures are great, outdoor activities abound, and you’ll find one of the most dog-friendly national parks in the United States.

During the summer, you can take advantage of the longer daylight hours and cooler temperatures that you can find in many countries at this time of year. Or take a spring trip to take advantage of the beautiful fall foliage in one of the best places in the world for fall foliage.

We are spending 5 months in Ontario and New England during our 2022 tour season. We spent two weeks in VT in July, a long weekend camping on the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks near Lake Placid, NY in mid to late August, a month in Kempton, NH in September, three weeks in Ellsworth, ME in early October, and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the beginning of our trip.)

There really isn’t a bad time to be in New England during these months. Sure, summer can be hot at night, but make sure your apartment rental includes air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (To be fair, we say this as people who live in Texas, so our heat tolerance is probably higher than someone who lives up north year-round. Let’s say we still manage without air conditioning, so in that sense, our tolerance is probably actually lower, ha!)

That said, if you want to plan your road trip for beautiful fall foliage, aim to travel in the second week of October. Although places known for foliage are busy (ie Kancamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the view will be worth it!

RTL Tip: Do you need time to hike or get on the water during your trip? Visit in July or August. Do you want a cozy autumn walk with hot apple cider in hand? Visit in October. Want cooler temperatures but fewer crowds? Visit in September.

Lincoln is definitely a fan of trips we can go on because it means it’s super easy for her to join us. If you are close enough to any point on this tour to drive, this is what we recommend. Drive to the nearest point along this route and drive a full circle to return home.

But if you can’t get here by car, and you have a dog that does well on a plane, you can fly into Boston International Airport and pick up a rental car when you land. If you are flying, we recommend organizing this route a bit and traveling from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

Note: If you’re too far away to travel at any point on this trip and there’s no way your child is getting on the plane (not Lincoln, unless she’s flying private in the seat next to us, ha!). so let us know in the comments below where you live and we’ll ask Lincoln to put together another list Closer to your starting goal.

We recommend treating this itinerary like a traditional road trip, staying at a different location at each stop on your journey. You can search for campsites near any destination or in nearby cities.

For Lincoln, NH, consider Pami River or Lost River Valley Campgrounds or City of Lincoln. (Can’t find anything in Lincoln? Check out Kempton, NY, just 20 miles south. We had a great month at Red Sleigh Cabins in Kempton.)

For Lake Placid, consider Rollins Pond Campground, Ausable Chasm Campground, or Lake Placid Village. (Want a really nice view? Find a place to stay in the Lake Placid neighborhood

Dog-friendly Days Out

Mirror lake Mirror Lake Inn has dog-friendly rooms and a restaurant with a dog-friendly terrace. Can’t find anything in Lake Placid? (Try nearby Wilmington.)

For Stowe, consider Smugglers Notch State Park Campgrounds or the town of Stowe. (You can also check it out about 40 minutes away in Burlington. Downtown Burlington is incredibly dog-friendly!)

For Acadia National Park, consider camping at Lakewoods or Bar Harbor. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you come to Ellsworth, check out the Blue Hill Sunset Hike. It’s spectacular, dog-friendly, and rivals the views in Acadia at 1/100 the amount. !)

Lincoln (the town, not to be confused with our dog who shares the same name) is nestled in the middle of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. That’s what makes it a great place to start a dog-friendly road trip.

Camping In New England: Best New England Campgrounds 2024

You could spend a week exploring this area of New Hampshire on your own because there are tons of dog-friendly hikes and things to do nearby! (We spent a month here and couldn’t do and see everything on our list!)

But since we only have one day to enjoy the White Mountains on this trip, here are our top tips for the best things to do.

This is a bonus since you can drive Kankamagus Road on your way from Portland to Lincoln. (So every time you drive your route, come back to this section. If you’re not full on this route, consider spending about two hours driving back and forth on Kancamagus Road during your time in Lincoln.)

Kankamagus Highway is a 34 mile drive between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. This is one of the most popular drives in New Hampshire and one of the best places in the United States to see fall leaves. Although there are many viewpoints and trails along this scenic route that can keep you busy throughout your journey, we recommend stopping at a few viewpoints and not hiking this route. (We’ll have better ones soon! Get up early. This drive gets crowded quickly, so either drive the night before or allow yourself to get up early to avoid a long drive and lots of traffic on the way to your next destination. Kancamagus The highway is great, but ideally not your only activity today!

Let you and your kids get out of the car and into the woods! Hiking was the activity that kept us most busy during our month in New Hampshire. We went out looking every weekend and many nights. Spending time outdoors hiking is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.

You can see all of our favorite hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top recommendation, we recommend going to Walsh-Dickie Mountain. This 4.4 mile trail is a beautiful half day hike with spectacular mountain scenery. It’s dog-friendly, good exercise and a lot of fun if you’re on different terrain between rock walls and wooded paths.

If you want to hike through All Trails, look for the Welch-Dickey Loop Trail (not “Welch Mountain Rockies” or “Welch and Dickey Mountains”). If you follow the entire route, you want to make sure you see the stone floor

Both Walsh and Mount Dickey. We recommend going clockwise so you can climb the hill between the highest sections. (Especially if it’s wet, or if you visit in the fall when the leaves are on the ground, this is helpful. Take your time, the view can be pleasant.)

Dog friendly? definitely. Everything about this road trip has Lincoln (dog) happy! Just be aware that there is a steep section of this hike on exposed rocks.
