Ogunquit Beach (pronounced /o-gun-quit/) is a narrow sandy peninsula of grassy sand dunes located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Ogunquit River on the southern coast of Maine.
Ogunquit is an Abenaki tribal name meaning “beautiful place by the sea” and was originally a small fishing village and farm on Perkins Bay. Artists began flocking to the city in the 1920s, and it gained a reputation as a summer art colony. Soft golden sand, the occasional rock, and clean, deep blue waves make this mile-long beach a very beautiful and walkable beach. Because Moshoe Beach is located away from the busy tourist town centers west of the Vineyard, it is generally quieter and less crowded than other beaches on the island.
Note that one part of Aquinas Beach is known for being an unofficial “clothing optional” area. There aren’t any signs so it’s easy to accidentally stumble upon it.
