Driving the Park Loop Road is a great way to orient yourself when you arrive in Acadia. Although it’s only 27 miles, plan to spend two or three hours on it and hike a bit to see the sights.
Here you’ll find some of the best views of the rugged coastline and steep cliffs, so give yourself plenty of time to take it all in.

Jordan Pond House Restaurant is located on the west side of Park Loop Road and overlooks Jordan Pond in Seal Harbor. Dogs are welcome to join you for lunch, afternoon tea or dinner on the terrace or at the picnic tables on the lawn. The food here is famous for their baked popovers, homemade ice cream and fresh Maine seafood!
If you’ve indulged in an ice cream pop-over (and I highly recommend you do!), a trip around Jordan Pond offers a chance to burn off some of those calories.
The road goes around the lake. The west side is rocky and the east side is easy to walk. But the good news is that both sides offer spectacular views, with the North Bubble and the South Bubble in the background.
Forty-five miles of carriage roads built between 1913 and 1940 criss-cross the heart of Acadia. Their construction was funded and overseen by John D. Rockefeller Jr. so that he and others could enjoy the park on non-motorized trails. Originally designed for horses and carriages, these roads are now popular with pedestrians and cyclists.

The park office will provide a trail map, highlighting the 17 stone bridges. Each bridge is unique in design and spans rivers, waterfalls, trails and cliffs.
We chose the six mile route around Eagle Lake. It was the perfect way to experience the tranquility of the park with Buster and Ty.
Are you hoping to see the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain? At more than 1,500 meters above sea level, it overlooks the Gulf peninsula and the vast Atlantic Ocean. But to be there at sunrise, you have to plan ahead!
From late May to late October, a vehicle reservation is required to reach the top of Cadillac Mountain. Sunrise passes are available two days before the date of your visit at 10:00 a.m. ET and sell out quickly. Daily reservations are available three months in advance and are easily obtained.

In addition to being one of the friendliest national parks, Acadia is one of the ten most popular parks. More than 4 million visitors visit the park every year. And having so many people in one place means it can get crowded. If you’re looking for a crowd, plan to spend a day exploring these areas outside the park.
Little Long Pond is a 1,000-acre park just outside Acadia’s borders. Formerly owned by the Rockefeller family, the land is donated and managed by the Land and Garden Preserve.
Dogs can get distended when swimming in a pool, walking through woods and pastures, or walking on roads and trails. Just make sure you follow the dog owner’s directions during your visit!

There is no road sign indicating this point. Then explore the entrance to Bracy Cove between Sale Harbor and North East Harbor.
Many visitors to Acadia never venture beyond Park Loop Road and the town of Bar Harbor. While it’s a fun little town, it can feel a bit crowded, especially if you’re trying to walk your dog.
When you’re ready for a break from the crowds, take a drive to Bass Harbor. Stop at the Bass Harbor Head Light Station and then grab a bite to eat at Seafood Catch on Shore Road. The patio is pet friendly, the seafood is right on the dock, and the views are unbeatable!
Most of Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island, near the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. For a more peaceful experience, visit 5% Park on the Shodak Peninsula near Winter Harbor, just 5 miles east of Mount Desert Island.

This peninsula differs from Mount Desert Island in many ways, but most importantly, it is less crowded. You can explore the Shodak Loop Trail, which is open year-round and runs about 6.5 miles one-way from the campground. Or take a ferry from Winter Harbor to Shodak Point and then Birch Harbor, extending your trip to 10 miles. Along the way you will come across many scenic and coastal stops.
From the Shodak Loop Road you will find trails for the Shodak Trail System that range from easy to difficult. They also have more than 8 miles of bike paths, and pets are welcome.
Acadia is located near Bar Harbor, a beach town. This means that many local fishmongers and some shops are closed for the winter.
The peak season in Bar Harbor is between Memorial Day and Labor Day If access to all the restaurants and shopping is important to you, you’ll want to plan your trip around that time. Summer temperatures are cool and usually in the 70s during the day.
The Most (and Least) Pet-friendly National Parks
If you love snow, don’t mind limited lodging and dining options, and want to feel like Acadia has it all to yourself, plan your trip in the winter. You’ll find many trails in Arcadia National Park that are ideal for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
