But if there’s one thing dogs love more than the beach, it’s discovering something new. Happily, Cornwall has some pet-friendly beaches.
Adjacent to Watergate Bay, there is a lot of sand even at high tide. The north coast is relatively quiet compared to other beaches. Local shops are good for gander, fish and chips, bucket and spade and ball.
Two miles from St Ives on the west coast. A large beach, extending a mile out to sea at low tide. The rover can roam freely, but must be guided on a trail.
Half off the beaten track between Penzance and Portlevan. There is some sand and shingle but no beach at high tide. Park at the top and keep the dogs on the beach. A romantic place that was home to a family of smugglers in the 18th century.
Top Ten Dog Friendly Beaches In Cornwall
One for the mighty. Access is a mile-long hike up a steep hill, but the trail is well marked and well worth the beach hike. Spectacular views of Pancaro Head. Facing east and south of Fowey, is Suntrap.
Ivy’s mother is a bay near Padstow. True to its name, the sandy beach is always quiet with zero amenities and no parking. Park at Herlin Bay and walk west along the coast for 20 minutes. Or stop at Harling, where lifeguards visit in the summer. Great place for families.
Six miles west of Newquay is a mile long sandy beach. The steep cliffs are great fun for dogs and the clean and safe waters are popular with swimmers and surfers. Passive access from car park.
A scree on the north-west side of the cliff with excellent views across the Camel Estuary and Padstow. Although wheelchair access is not ideal, parking is available due to the steps to the beach. Lots of sand at low tide and a great spot for windsurfing.

East of Sennen Cove and popular with pooches and surfers. Dogs make short work of going up and down the path, while their walkers get a great workout. Swimming is best on flat days, but be aware of the tides. Lifeguard services from spring to September.
It is part of a four-mile stretch of coastline that starts at Hale Estuary and ends at Godrevy Lighthouse. Featuring spectacular sand dunes, its front waters are great for swimming and surfing. Another gem on the Cornish coast that dogs love.

Most major beaches have a seasonal restriction, but with hidden dunes, quiet sands and secret beaches, Cornwall still has a dog-friendly coastline where dogs are allowed all year round.
Cornwall’s seasonal restrictions generally run from 1 July to 31 August on selected beaches from 10am to 6pm, however, on some beaches from 15 May to 30 September 10am to 6pm. There is a ban. To find a full list of places where the ban applies, see Cornwall Council’s website.
But whether you’re looking for a breezy winter walk or a sun-baked summer stroll, there are still plenty of places to take your dog for a great day at the beach despite the seasonal restrictions.
A Dog-friendly Guide To Cornwall
There are many beaches around St Ives Bay that are perfect for a day out with your four-legged friend. From Gwythian Towns south to the Black Peaks of Hale Riviera, dogs are welcome along three miles of glorious open golden sand.
Or try spending a day with your dog at Peters Point, Upton Towns and Mexico Town for pristine beaches. Connected by a coastal road that winds its way through the sand dunes, you can expect a grand and majestic atmosphere when you see the famous Godrevi Lighthouse.
Cross the river and you’ll find Portkidney Beach, a short coastal walk or drive from Corbys Bay, nestled between Hale Estuary and Hawke’s Point. Looking at the vast expanse of north-facing sand, it’s easy to see how artist John Miller found his muse amidst such soul-inspiring beaches.
Holidaymakers can head west for more dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall, beyond the ‘secret’ Bamaluge Beach (which is only revealed at low tide) between St Ives Harbor and Portwhidden Beach.

Past wooded moorland and steep cliff lines, Pothers Cove between Morwa and Pendine offers a wonderful secluded spot, while Priests Cove in Cape Cornwall offers a stunning, otherworldly area, perfect for a picnic or barbecue.
Equally spectacular, Gwenver Beach near Land’s End offers not only a surfer’s paradise but also a dog owner’s dream. Although it’s not the most accessible beach, the hidden neighborhood of Sennen Cove is worth a cliff-hugging stroll, offering a quiet, rugged charm usually reserved for island escapes.
On the western Atlantic edge of Land’s End, you’ll find a collection of exotic-looking coves, including the romantic Paydon Wonder at Porthcurno, across from the crystal waters of Nungysel and the famous Minnock Theatre. It is best to seek advice from locals and lifeguards on the best routes to access these beaches.
Heading west towards Penzance, you’ll see Roskilly Beach down the rocky road between Mousehole and Newlyn. Newlyn Art Gallery’s Wharrytown Beach is home to a pebbly and dog-friendly beach.
The 5 Best Dog Friendly Beaches In Cornwall
The gently curving Bay of Mounts flows from Newlyn to Marasian, the iconic St Michael’s Mount and the dog-welcoming Penzance Promenade Beach (tide dependent) and the sandy stretches of Long Rock Beach.
Head east along Cornwall’s south coast and you’ll discover a world of rolling waves, exposed headlands and winding roads. Venture beyond Marazione and you’ll discover the delights of Prussia Cove, where the beautifully jagged landscape offers everything from sheltered beaches to fields of wildflowers.
The west Cornwall coast heads east to Portalvan, where Low Bar Beach – complete with Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake – allows dogs to roam free to water here as it is unsafe for swimming.
The most south-eastern and uber scenic point of the county is the Lizard Peninsula, which offers a selection of dog-friendly spots including the stunning Mullion Cove, Polpoir Cove and Pentrith.
