How To Go On Vacation When You Have A Dog – We have been traveling a lot with our dog for about 13 years. I’m one of those dog parents who believes that a family vacation isn’t a vacation without a beloved family member. We have learned a lot and made more than a few mistakes along the way trying to create an amazing vacation with our dogs. This time we are planning a big vacation with the dog, and the dog will take a very important trip with him! We know exactly how to plan and prepare for a good dog-friendly vacation.
In this post, I share all the basics of dog walking. I’ll be talking about dog travel gear, including all the essential dog travel gear and dog travel gear you need for a fun vacation with your dog.
How To Go On Vacation When You Have A Dog
The most important things you need when on holiday with your dog are food and water, and a bowl to feed them. That should be the easy part, just throw the dog food in the bag and grab the water from the hotel room, right? It’s not good. There are several considerations for feeding your dog on vacation versus feeding it at home.
Leaving Your Dog During Vacation
Whatever you feed your dog, think about proper temperature control. Should dog food be refrigerated? Need warmth? Do you mix ingredients for your dog’s food? Make sure you have everything you need to plan your dog’s meals while traveling, as well as dog-friendly vacation spots.
Most hotels have mini fridges and microwaves in the rooms, but not all. If you don’t know the hotel you are staying with your dog, make sure the hotel has everything you need to prepare dog food.
Same with private vacation rentals. Find out about all the facilities and tools available to make sure you have everything you need to prepare dog food.
Regarding water, make sure you have enough clean water to keep you safe while driving, flying or sailing to your destination. I bring bottled water with the dogs in case I’m not sure of the quality of the water we’ll have. I also carry water wherever I take my dog when we go out and on vacation.
Car Travel With Dogs: Does Your Dog Deserve A Road Trip?
I feed my dog twice a day, a mix of dry dog food and dog food, wet or canned dog food. At home I prepare myself and cook; eggs, chicken or fish. But when we travel, I tend to take them with me and lighten up my meals. I measure and pack dry food for the duration of the trip. I carry a measuring cup to keep the right amount of food. I also carry a small packet of uniform food to mix with the dry food. These two ingredients make dog food super easy!
I carry a collapsible food and water bowl when I walk my dog. They fold up and travel well, taking up very little space in the dog travel bag.
The most important item in this category is a copy of your dog’s most recent rabies vaccination certificate. I keep a copy of my dog’s rabies certificate in my car and a clear picture of the rabies certificate on my phone so I can sign it and display it anywhere.
If your dog has any current health issues, bring documentation. Have vet information ready in case of injury or illness. Know where you can get emergency veterinary care in your area if you need it.
Holidays With Dogs: How To Make It Stress-free.
During a long trip with our dog once, we needed immediate veterinary attention because of throat irritation from the cleaning products used in the hotel room we stayed in. We were lucky to find such an amazing vet in central Ohio! We are so grateful to have found it.
Consider your dog’s health when planning your dog vacation. Forget the medicine, whether for illness or heart disease, fleas and ticks, can leave them unprotected! Even a short period of protection can expose your dog to fleas, ticks or heartworms!
If you forget your dog’s medication at home, you may not be able to find a veterinarian willing to fill your dog’s prescription. Make sure you pack all the medicine your dog needs. Ironically, we always leave when it’s time to give our monthly heartworm/lice/tick treatment! I prepare the dose so that my dogs are not vulnerable to protection.
We are big fans of probiotics and dog health supplements. My husky, Icy really needs it. He is now 13 and has colic and some arthritis so antibiotics and dog supplements are very important for his comfort and health. I always remember to prepare for him.
What To Do With Your Pets When You Are On Vacation
Don’t forget to pack dog treats and chew sticks for your dog. Depending on how well-travelled your dog is, you may want to bring some doggy pacifiers, or even cool clothes like a Thundershirt if he gets really nervous in unfamiliar places. Icy and Phoebe are good travelers so they don’t need soothing products, but I always have lots of treats and bars to keep busy and happy in the room, and when we stop at a local cafe. It’s the holidays too, so spoil them with some great treats!
Do you brush your dog’s teeth or use a non-brushing dog mouth care? Try to bring him a chew stick for the dog as well. I packed dog teeth, one for each day of the trip. I like to keep my dog’s teeth even during the holidays.
Dog fur can get dirty and tangled when traveling. Keep them clean and tidy by carrying a comb or brush, dog shampoo and conditioner, and other dog grooming essentials.

If you’re going to be walking on very hot sand or walking in unfamiliar or potentially uncomfortable places, you may want to consider boots or dog shoes to protect your paws.
Whatever you do with your dog on vacation, make sure to bring plenty of water! You’d be surprised how much water your dog needs just to be out in the sun, and you don’t want to run out of water. Do not rely on fountains or ponds to get drinking water for your dog. Always bring someone with you.
We never travel with dogs without a first aid kit. He is a thick-skinned husky. He plays hard and likes to explore every nook and cranny. Obsession with the wrong game has led to several injuries over the years. We went through a lot of hydrogen peroxide, animal bandages, antibacterial ointments and wound creams.
