Bologna is a beautiful city in the north of the country, famous for its food and red brick city center. We have seen many food and beverage establishments that accept pets. The food in Bologna was very special and very tasty. But like most cities, tourist attractions, including churches and museums, are limited, as are most pet-friendly places. Among the tourist attractions I enjoyed were the Torre del Orologio, Piazza Maggiore and Bologna Portico.

Rome is a fascinating city with many world-class tourist attractions. These include Roman ruins such as St. Peter’s Basilica and the Colosseum in the Vatican. The city is beautiful and has so many interesting things to see, making it perfect for dog walking.
When walking your dog in Italy, be very careful when crossing the road, many drivers seem to ignore it.
Henry was welcoming in all the bars and restaurants we visited, as seen in Rome. Some even offered the dog water or happily filled its travel bag. There were also many locals and tourists with their dogs.
The Uk’s Most Pet Friendly Places To Visit
Popular places to visit near the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain and Roman Forum were perfect for an evening dog walk in Rome. For daytime fun, we stay in areas with lots of shade or grass underfoot. It was easy to find dog friendly accommodation in Rome. Since our budget was limited, we chose a campsite outside the city. Many options close to the center were also convenient.
Trieste is a beautiful city on the Adriatic coast of Italy. It is a combination of Hapsburg and Italianate architecture, with the harbor added to the mix. There are many beautiful things to see while exploring the city, including the magnificent castle. We found that Trieste is dog friendly and many people are out and about with their pets. Many of the dishes look like they would accommodate fish guests, while some offer bowls of water. Additionally, most shops in the city have dog welcome signs.
Trieste is a great city for dog walking. There are many interesting places to visit and plenty of green spaces for small walks. Trieste is one of the best destinations for sunset views, especially from the harbor. It was easy to find suitable accommodation in the city and Booking.com had options at many price points, including budget rooms.
Visiting the ruins of Pompeii was a bucket list trip. Pompeii is in the south of Italy and is easy to reach by train with a dog. The ruins of Pompeii are special to visit and are some of the best preserved buildings. The site is huge and it may take a day to see everything. There isn’t much to see in the city apart from the ruins and the main town square, so most people only visit for a day trip. Nearby Mount Vesuvius dominates the skyline and is especially beautiful at sunset.
Dog Friendly Places To Visit
We saw that bars and restaurants allow fish guests. Finding pet friendly accommodation was easy and there were options. The biggest downside to Pompeii was that the walks in the area were not very friendly and the abundance of unsocial dogs annoyed me. This is not where I would go back with Henry.

Italy is famous for its food and eating at their home is wonderful. Most restaurants across the country welcome dogs with open arms and a little fanfare. We never turned back on our visit and Henry offered water several times.
Eating in Italy was a delight, especially in Bologna, where there are consistently excellent restaurants. The food in Bologna was the best of all the places we visited in Italy. This included the regional specialty Tagliatelle al Ragù Bolognese. We went to several small restaurants in Rome, all dog friendly. My favorite meal in Rome was at Colonna Cafe and Restaurant. We enjoyed their manti with some beers. They even gave me cold water to fill Henry’s bag.
Pet Friendly Places To Visit
As in most of Europe, finding pet-friendly hotels, apartments and guesthouses in Italy is quite simple. You can use Airbnb, Booking.com, Pitchup.com or many other smaller sites to find accommodation that suits your needs. There is a filter that allows pets, making it very easy to find the perfect place to stay. Be aware that some places charge extra for staying with dogs, so it’s best to check policies before booking.
Getting around Italy is very easy and has an excellent public transport system. Pets can travel on most trains and buses in the country.
When dog backpacking in Europe, we usually travel by train, and Italy was no exception. We’ve seen trains and other public transport companies across the country accept dogs with very few rules and fees.
