Assateague Island is a 37-mile stretch of sand, maritime forest, and salt marsh shared with Maryland and Virginia. Most people are drawn to Assateague by its untamed horses. But if you’re looking for a dog-friendly beach vacation that gets back to nature, Assateague Island is hard to beat!

7 Fun Dog-friendly Day Trips To Take Near Dc This Summer

Assateague Island is a great choice for a relaxing, dog-friendly beach vacation on the East Coast. With miles of beaches, great hiking trails, paved bike paths, and canoes and kayaks, this is a place to truly enjoy nature!

Assateague Island is located 150 miles east of Washington, DC, divided by the Maryland and Virginia state lines. The southern third of Virginia Island is home to Assateague Lighthouse and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. However, in some areas of Virginia Island, pets are prohibited, even in vehicles.

Luckily, there is plenty to do on the island of Maryland! It is home to much of the Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park, Maryland’s only coastal park. And interestingly, national beaches are actually more pet-friendly than national parks!

There are no roads on the whole island. And traveling from the north ramp near Ocean City, Maryland to the south ramp in Chincoteague, Virginia requires a 50-mile cross-country trip. Therefore, if you are traveling with a pet, it is important to plan your accommodation accordingly.

As mentioned above, pets are prohibited throughout Assateague Island, Virginia. This even applies to cars.

The northern two-thirds of the island is in Maryland and is split between the National Seashore and Assateague National Park. Each park sets its own pet policy.

Assateague Island National Seashore In most areas of Maryland, pets are welcome year-round as long as they are kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet. This includes most beaches, the water on those beaches, most campsites, and marinas for boat launches. Pets are not allowed at the following waterfront locations:

Leashed pets are allowed year-round at the Marina and Rackliffe Trail on the mainland. At the campground (last week of April – November 1st), pets are welcome in Camp Loops G, H, I and on the beaches (and water) adjacent to these loops and on the hiking/biking trail to the west. Organized by camping.

Paw-fectly Pet-friendly Places

When the campgrounds are closed (November 1st through the third week of April), leashed pets are allowed on all campground loops and adjacent beaches, including in the water.

Leashed pets are allowed in day areas of the park after Labor Day through the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.

Assateague Island’s north entrance can be accessed from Berlin or Ocean City, Maryland. The Verrazano Bridge crosses the island from the mainland and connects to Assateague National Park.

Please note that in the National Park, from the last week of April until November 1st, only the beaches adjacent to Camp Loop G, H and I are allowed. When the campsites are closed (from November 1st until the third week of April), pets are allowed on beaches adjacent to all camping loops. You can get a map at the visitor center to find the loop at the campground.

Continuing south, Assateague Island National Seashore offers miles of dog-friendly beaches. Leashed pets are welcome on all beaches except the lifeguard beach directly across from the Bayside Drive-in Campground.

Leaving the parking lot, the beach is wide, deep and sparsely populated. We saw people fishing, sleeping, cooking and warming themselves by the fire after surfing.

If you want even more seclusion, you can get permission to drive your car right onto the beach! An Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) permit costs $110, is valid for one year, and can be purchased online at www.recreation.gov. The license must be picked up within 10 days of purchase and you’re good to drive in the sand on the paved roads of South Ocean Beach!

Dog Friendly Vacations Maryland

While the dog-friendly beaches are spectacular, Assateague Island is best known for its herd of wild horses. These herds, descendants of domestic horses introduced to the island in the late 17th century, have now returned to the wild.

The Best Pet-friendly Hotels In Every Southern State

It is absolutely essential that guests do not feed the horses. This group has evolved to survive in the island’s harsh vegetation. If you feed the animals during the tourist season, it will be difficult for them to return to their normal diet when the crowds are gone. And in harsh winters, it can spell disaster.

The horse is smaller than I expected. In fact, many people call horses “horses”. However, since they are wild animals, they may bite or kick you if you approach them, so don’t underestimate them. It is best viewed from a distance, especially if you have a dog with you.

Finding wild horses is usually very easy. The Maryland and Virginia herds each have about 150 horses. And they like to hang out in small groups around parking lots and trails and roads. They also enjoy long walks on the beach, checking out the picnic baskets along the way. So be careful at lunch!

Still worried about missing out? Just before crossing the Verrazano Bridge into the park, stop at the Assateague Island Visitor Center for a “horse report.”
