Lake Killington in the Lake District and Telford in Shropshire have been named as the best motorway service stations – for motorists traveling with dogs this Christmas.
Services to Oxford on the M40, Reading on the M4 and Tebay on the M6 in Penrith, Cumbria, also made the top five stops for dog-friendly properties.

A survey of 1,852 dog owners found they plan to walk their dog an average of 115 miles this Christmas to celebrate with loved ones.
Almost three quarters (72%) of people who plan to travel with their dog make at least one stop every two hours to let their furry friend stretch their legs.
Other highly rated motorway service stations for dog owners include Chester on the M56, Northampton on the M1 and Gloucester on the M5.
The research was carried out by CarStore, who also created the handy tool Pooch Pitstop Planner, which automatically generates potential pit stops.

“We have no doubt that all the stops on our list of motorway services cater in some way to the needs of our four-legged friends, but other factors such as a quiet atmosphere, space to get out of -the road and, very importantly, places to go to the toilet make some positions more suitable than others.
“The service station voted best by dog owners is Lake Killington near Kendall, which boasts picturesque green spaces deliberately set back from the highway, a good picnic area and a dog-friendly approach.”
It also found that three quarters (74%) of respondents do not know where they can safely stop for their four-legged pets to burn off some energy.

This goes beyond normal planning, with 61% admitting that they stop more often with their dog in the car than if they were driving alone.
Just over a third (34%) of drivers traveling with dogs this Christmas will be traveling with more than one furry friend.
Almost two-thirds (63%) admit that they often put their dog’s comfort before their own when they travel.

A study by OnePoll.com found that 77% of people have doubts about being with their dog in the wrong place.
A careful third are concerned that their pet may accidentally hit a car while parking, and another 33% are concerned that their pup may be disturbed by noise at work.
