If you need a break from shopping and dining, take an eight-minute walk to Cedar Oaks Park. The hot forest trail is shaded, so don’t be afraid to sweat. Enjoy the birds and wildflowers as you walk the trail with your furry friend.

In 2000, the Longleaf Trace was completed as a Rails-to-Trails project, turning the Central Mississippi Trail into 44 miles of walking, hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. Dogs can enjoy the trail as long as it is kept calm. At seven miles, the Jackson train station has a dog park where you can meet other travelers and their children.

This national park offers many friendly hiking trails and a large dog park with a large running room. Your pup will love watching the geese and the pond as you stroll through the park! There is a designated area for large and small dogs, providing water and waste bags on site. There are also plenty of shelters and pavilions to cool down after I pass.

Hiking along the Tombigbee River is a feast for your eyes, along with the Columbus River Trail at the Lodge. If you bring your dog, make sure it is supervised at all times. The 4.5 mile scenic route begins on Main Street in downtown Columbus. One of the highlights of the route is the bridge that crosses the river and offers spectacular sunset views. The trail is well lit so you can enjoy the trail even after dark. There is also a trail that connects the Riverwalk to the nearby ballpark, with a dog park complete with fire hydrants, a dog jump bag, a water fountain with a dog bowl, and more!
The one acre dog park is a nature lover’s dream. A day at the park costs two dollars per person and is worth it. Grab your dog and head down the path that leads to one of the park’s most spectacular waterfalls – 50 to explore, up to 30 feet! Don’t forget to keep your dog clean to make the park beautiful and everyone having fun.
From the top of Natchez Bluff, the Natchez Bluff Trail offers spectacular views of the Mississippi River. A 200-foot wooden staircase takes you and your dog down the mighty Mississippi River to the bottom of a path that passes by beautiful Victorian homes and boats. The oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine on the Florida Atlantic Coast was founded in 1565 and is famous for such sites as the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument (the country’s oldest surviving castle, built in 1680). The Fountain of Youth (yes, that!), the Cathedral Basilica (the oldest parish in the country, founded in 1585) and Aviles Street (the oldest street in the US, first appeared on the map in 1580). You can see the ghosts of long-time explorers, pirates and early settlers.

The coastal city is only four hours from Atlanta, but it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It has a remote and isolated feel with its 22 residences, fountains (including the famous fountain in Forsyth Park) and greenery, and modern European architecture that joins the beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery miles three from the city center. Be sure to visit all of these sites, as well as learn about the city’s history and spirit tours, walk the River Street Boardwalk, and eat a Southern lunch at these places like Mrs. Wilkes’ Diner. Don’t miss the Biltmore House; this is one of those ‘must visit’ places that really fits. Beautiful accommodation tours and hotels, wineries and other attractions in the property are top notch. But take time to explore downtown Asheville, which is very walkable and filled with great shopping and world-class restaurants, and explore the nearby Pisgah National Forest with its many waterfalls and trails. The Blue Ridge Parkway can take you in and out of town and is one of the most scenic drives in the South.
Known for its Southern authors, no state can claim the literary world like Mississippi, and nowhere more clearly than Oxford, home of the great writer William Faulkner. The city’s Faulkner Park includes the beloved Rowan Oak House (where you can see a typewriter and painting of “A Tale” on the wall) and the Oxford Cemetery, located north of the town square. If you love books, there’s no better place in the South than Book Square; The bookstore is John Grisham’s “home” store and includes a large inventory and many book-related activities.
