7 Dog-friendly Vacation Spots To Explore
Exploring all the places we’ve been can be a lot! You can hop on a subway that allows dogs in carriers, or a taxi or a ride-sharing service like Via or Uber that allows larger dogs. It’s a good idea to ask the driver if your dog is ok before getting into the car, but they all told us yes! So if you’re thinking about taking your dog to New York, you can easily do so. Via was new to me but we liked that they usually send a large 10 passenger van so there was plenty of room for a large dog like Lucy.
Of course, NYC is very walkable! Consider the temperature and the amount of exercise your dog may get. It is a good idea to test the temperature of the pavement with your own feet. If you can’t do it for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog and you should get in the car.
One of the best parts of traveling with a dog is researching dog-friendly hotels and their amenities. Great dog friendly hotels can be found on websites like www.petswelcome.com, there are plenty to choose from. Lucy loved jumping into the big bed at the Rivington Hotel (our friends from WTFrenchie stayed there the week we were in town). The hotel welcomes two dogs per room, so it’s a great option if you’re traveling with a small pack. The great thing about this hotel is that it’s only a few blocks from one of the most dog-friendly bars in town. D.B.A. East Village welcomes dogs inside the fence and in the yard. Be prepared to get a lot of attention from other dog lovers while enjoying their extensive beer selection.

Next time we’re in New York Lucy and I should go to the Soho Grand Hotel, WTFrenchie is there too! It has dedicated pet-friendly floors and an exclusive rooftop dog park created by Oprah’s favorite garden designer, Rebecca Cole. This hotel has all the options for your dog, offering organic treats, bedding, food and water bowls and dog bags. The best part? No pet fee!
Another option when visiting the Big Apple with a dog is to do what we did and head to Brooklyn for dog-friendly hotels. Lucy and I stayed at the Even Hotel which was right next to Prospect Park. The room was small but had hard floors which are great for dog rooms.
One of the highlights of our entire trip was the 5 am off-leash in Prospect Park. Dogs of all shapes and sizes graze on the vast lawn, almost a kilometer long. The park even has a dog beach if your dog wants to swim. Lucy had to stay beautiful so no beach for her!
Which reminds me, as much as we all love our dogs, it’s no secret that dog pee can be a huge nuisance. Especially if you want to maintain a manicured garden with lush green grass! Dog Menus Available In New York City
Eating out with your dog in New York was so easy in the summer. Almost every neighborhood has street cafes. A great restaurant to take your dog to is Bluestone Lane on the Upper East Side, located directly across from one of the entrances to Central Park. Lucy and I went there with our backpacks and asked for a table for 5 girls and 7 dogs, which we got amazingly!
Like Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, Central Park welcomes dogs on leash from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. After enjoying one of the most famous parks in the country (and taking a photo with Natalie Sabres), we strolled down Bluestone Lane for its famous avocado toast and endless dog water refills. This cafe has plenty of umbrellas for sidewalk seating and an extra wide sidewalk so the dogs had plenty of shade and personal space to enjoy their visit.
