Vacations With Dogs In Texas – Fall is the perfect time of year to get outside for pet-friendly Texas weekend getaways. The weather is finally cooling down, but it’s not so cold that you need to pack winter gear. Walking during the day becomes not only bearable, but comfortable, not to mention safer for you and your dog. At night, temperatures drop enough to warrant a cozy fire under the stars, where you can make s’mores or just cuddle with your pup under a blanket.
Fortunately for San Antonio, there are many great places to visit within a short drive. Whether you’re looking for a full camping experience, a luxury cabin or something in between, there’s something out there for everyone. If quarantine and the hot summer months have you feeling cooped up and restless, it’s time to pack your bags, get in the car and head to one of these three pet-friendly Texas weekend getaways.

If you spend any time on Instagram, you’ve probably seen these cute little cabins in remote areas across the United States. There are three outposts in Texas, and all are within easy driving distance of San Antonio: one outside Dallas (4.5 hours from SA), one outside Houston (3 hours from SA), and one outside Austin/San Antonio (in Wimberley) ) , to be exact, only about 1 hour away)!
Although located in the middle of nowhere, each cabin has a comfortable queen-size bed with stunning views over the countryside, a well-equipped bathroom with shower and toilet, and a small kitchenette with cooking equipment. Best of all, Getaway is super pet friendly and only charges a flat fee of $40 to cover the extra cleaning costs! They offer food and water bowls, a s’mores set for doggies, and even have an outdoor long leash where you can lead your dog but still give him room to roam.
According to the founder, Getaway was created “to give people time, space and permission to be free. Our little cabins in nature offer a break from the city, technology and work, allowing you to recharge and reconnect with who and what what means the most.”
If you want to “get away” from it all without doing the hard work, this is the perfect weekend getaway for you and your dog!

If you’re looking for something a little more connected to nature, 13 Acres Retreat might be the perfect place for you! I first discovered this hidden gem when I was looking for a weekend getaway last winter for my husband and I’s 2 year anniversary. Located on 13 acres of wilderness, these quaint cabins are located outside of Dripping Springs, just an hour and a half from San Antonio.
Each cabin has an air conditioner/heater, a small coffee pot, a comfortable bed with fresh linens, and a great view of the Texas Hill Country. There are two compound toilets on site, but don’t let that put you off! They are beautifully decorated and kept impeccably clean! Other amenities include a water cooler to fill the reusable bottle, a sink with soap to wash the dishes and your hands, and a shower with hot water. However, there is an outdoor shower which is very cute but can also be a little chilly if you visit in the cooler months.
There is no shortage of things to do while staying at 13 Acres Retreat. You can wander around the property (note: there are no trails, so it’s an adventure!) or hop in the car and check out some nearby state parks like Pedernales Falls. If hiking isn’t quite your thing (or your dog’s thing), you can also check out some of the dog-friendly wineries/breweries that are all within 20-30 minutes of the retreat. My personal favorite is Hawk’s Shadow Winery.
If you’ve never visited Lost Maples this fall, GO. Lost Maples State Natural Area is a little under 2 hours away from San Antonio and is known for being one of the few places in Texas where you can see amazing fall foliage. You just have to time it right, because the leaves don’t start to change until the temperatures drop – usually around mid-October or early November. Texas weather is always unpredictable, but you can check the park’s fall leaf color report here.
The Best Dog-friendly Beaches In The Us
As the leaves begin to change color, Lost Maples becomes a hot spot for activity! It is highly recommended that you book a campsite in advance – sometimes up to a year in advance! Due to COVID, access is even more limited and you must book tickets (both camping and day passes) in advance either online or by calling the customer service center.
I promise you, it’s worth it! Not only is Lost Maples a beautiful piece of nature year-round, but there are more than 10 miles of trails for you to explore, including a loop that takes you along the top of a 2,200-foot cliff. There are 30 campsites with water and electricity, and about 50 primitive campsites that you can walk to, many of which are a short walk from compost toilets.
If you or your pup aren’t really into camping, you can definitely make Lost Maples a day trip. It’s certainly close enough to drive out there in the morning, enjoy a hike, and drive home in the afternoon. However, it’s hard to beat a night or two out under the stars, especially when the weather is cool enough to snuggle up in a sleeping bag with your pup!

This 3.5 kilometer route is not your typical walking route as it is right in the middle of the city centre. But it’s perfect for a brisk walk, bike ride or roller skating with your dog. The Katy Trail Ice House is located along the trail where you can stop for a cold margarita and dinner in their large outdoor dining area. This is my FAVORITE dog friendly restaurant in all of Dallas!
