Plan A Dog Friendly Trip To The Outer Banks
Historic Downtown Savannah has a walkability rating of 90/100. By parking your car near the accommodation, you and your pup can walk to almost everything the city has to offer. Savannah has a wide variety of friendly accommodations, from commercial hotels to historic hotel rooms and Airbnb rentals. Note that most hotels and motels require that dogs be kept in bed while you are away, if there are no dogs in the rooms at all. If you rent out individual houses and apartments, you have more options. But read the Airbnb rules carefully.
It’s nice to live in the neighborhood of Colonial Cemetery Park, which is located in the middle, almost halfway between the river that reaches the historic district to the north and Forsyth Hill, which borders it to the south. Some of my favorite restaurants are a few blocks away on Bull Street, and you’re also close to the shops of Broghton Street. The Perry Lane Hotel (from $314 per night) offers a luxury hotel experience with pet-friendly accommodations, fine dining, and a private pool. The Vintage DeSoto Savannah (from $209 per night) is also nearby and offers slightly more modest rooms and nightly rates. If you’re looking for a personalized hotel experience, the Hamilton Turner Inn (rates from $361 per night) in Lafayette Square is one of the most romantic bed and breakfasts in Savannah.
If you want to stay closer to River Street, I recommend the historic East Bay Inn (rates at $239 per night). We have stayed here several times over the years and it is the perfect combination of hotel and historic B&B. At the western end of the historic district, the Thunderbirds Inn (from $112 per night) offers affordable accommodations that accommodate more than four-legged friends. Technically you are still in the historical region. You just plan a longer walk to most of the sights.
We’ve also stayed at several friends’ Airbnbs over the years. We love using Airbnb’s Maps feature and the Welcome Pets filter to focus on places we like and the amenities available there. Note that many Airbnbs charge an additional pet fee and cleaning fee in addition to the overnight stay. So that the cost to the whole price is slightly higher than the original price. For us, with the pet fees charged by hotels, and the price we pay to keep our dogs at home (about $50 per pet per night), one option is not necessarily cheaper than the other. Whether we take our dogs with us or not depends more on whether we want to book a trip with a dog than a quiet romantic getaway. Because we have one or the other, not both, haha.

All this means is that there are friendly restaurants and shops on both streets, but you and your dogs will have strong crowds and lots of distractions.
Savannah is known for its tram and walking tours. They cover a bit of history and pop culture, looking at all the movies that were filmed there and usually include personal recommendations from the directors. After your walk, you’ll meet other travelers and their pups on a walking tour of the historic district, which includes a history lesson, a photo op in front of the Forsyth Park fountain, and playing in the game room. Your pups will also receive a homemade Oliver Bentley cookie to take home with them to say goodbye. We loved this tour as much as our dogs and highly recommend it. They are totally crazy after that!
Old Savannah Wagon Tours offers tours of the historic area and welcomes small dogs to sit on their laps during rides. Vehicle Tours Savannah accepts dogs in private vehicle tours and can also accommodate small dogs for shared tours.
