There are many opportunities to relax and enjoy. Kyle and I love to travel and our new pups Finn and Pippin encourage us to seek out friendly places as a family of four. Before traveling with dogs, but they were aggressive and terrible in new things. We couldn’t accompany them on busy streets or take them to crowded places, so most of our trips were to Airbnbs. We also have a groomer that we love and trust and that we take our dogs with. When Finn and Pippin joined our family as puppies, it was an opportunity to train and interact with them from a young age. Both are friendly and playful around other dogs, so we’ve decided to book the first four-legged family vacation to a city we know and love, and is also known to be a pet destination: Savannah!

Savannah, Georgia, offers a variety of pet-friendly hotels as well as Airbnbs, restaurants with dog-friendly patios, and maids and maids and tours. (For more information, I recommend my “Complete Guide to Savannah and What to Do in Savannah.”) The city itself is also dog-friendly with its shady streets, park spaces, and expansive Forsyth Park. j-a-l-ks Additionally, hiking trails at Skidaway Island State Park and Wormsloe Historic Site are just a short drive away. Maybe you’re looking for a fun, pet-friendly city for your next family vacation. Or maybe you’re already planning to visit Savannah, but wondering if you should bring your dogs. I hope that answers your questions and shows you another reason to love the city of women: how warm and welcoming it is to our four-legged friends!

Plan A Dog Friendly Trip To The Outer Banks

Historic Downtown Savannah has a walkability rating of 90/100. By parking your car near the accommodation, you and your pup can walk to almost everything the city has to offer. Savannah has a wide variety of friendly accommodations, from commercial hotels to historic hotel rooms and Airbnb rentals. Note that most hotels and motels require that dogs be kept in bed while you are away, if there are no dogs in the rooms at all. If you rent out individual houses and apartments, you have more options. But read the Airbnb rules carefully.

It’s nice to live in the neighborhood of Colonial Cemetery Park, which is located in the middle, almost halfway between the river that reaches the historic district to the north and Forsyth Hill, which borders it to the south. Some of my favorite restaurants are a few blocks away on Bull Street, and you’re also close to the shops of Broghton Street. The Perry Lane Hotel (from $314 per night) offers a luxury hotel experience with pet-friendly accommodations, fine dining, and a private pool. The Vintage DeSoto Savannah (from $209 per night) is also nearby and offers slightly more modest rooms and nightly rates. If you’re looking for a personalized hotel experience, the Hamilton Turner Inn (rates from $361 per night) in Lafayette Square is one of the most romantic bed and breakfasts in Savannah.

If you want to stay closer to River Street, I recommend the historic East Bay Inn (rates at $239 per night). We have stayed here several times over the years and it is the perfect combination of hotel and historic B&B. At the western end of the historic district, the Thunderbirds Inn (from $112 per night) offers affordable accommodations that accommodate more than four-legged friends. Technically you are still in the historical region. You just plan a longer walk to most of the sights.

We’ve also stayed at several friends’ Airbnbs over the years. We love using Airbnb’s Maps feature and the Welcome Pets filter to focus on places we like and the amenities available there. Note that many Airbnbs charge an additional pet fee and cleaning fee in addition to the overnight stay. So that the cost to the whole price is slightly higher than the original price. For us, with the pet fees charged by hotels, and the price we pay to keep our dogs at home (about $50 per pet per night), one option is not necessarily cheaper than the other. Whether we take our dogs with us or not depends more on whether we want to book a trip with a dog than a quiet romantic getaway. Because we have one or the other, not both, haha.

Ultimate Guide To Pet-friendly Restaurants On Clearwater (mainland)

One of the best (and free) things to do in friendly Savannah is walking around with 21 parking spaces. The historical region is laid out in a grid pattern with every few square blocks. Each square is like a separate park, or a historical monument, a fountain, a palace or a unique garden. You will enjoy a scenic walk and views along the way

Action In addition, we inevitably find shops, restaurants and museums that we plan to visit later in the trip or stop at. You can also walk your dog in Forsyth Park’s Colonial Cemetery and Gardens. There are trash cans in the cemetery where you can throw doggy poop bags, and there are water fountains in the park where you can fill collapsible water for puppies so your pups can drink while walking.

Although entertainment is allowed on River and Brocton streets, I try to stay away from these areas when walking my dogs simply because of traffic and foot traffic. There are quite a few on the streets and sidewalks, which can stimulate some dogs. Especially on River Street, many restaurants are right on the sidewalk and many people pass by. All this means is that there are friendly restaurants and shops on both streets, but you and your dogs will have strong crowds and lots of distractions.

Savannah is known for its tram and walking tours. They cover a bit of history and pop culture, looking at all the movies that were filmed there and usually include personal recommendations from the directors. There are tours to suit every taste: history, food, architecture, art and culture, shadow tours, pub crawls and more. There are also tricks for some dogs.

Have Pets, Will Travel

Oliver Bentley’s Historic Dog Walking Tour is an absolute gem of a tour. After your walk, you’ll meet other travelers and their pups on a walking tour of the historic district, which includes a history lesson, a photo op in front of the Forsyth Park fountain, and playing in the game room. Your pups will also receive a homemade Oliver Bentley cookie to take home with them to say goodbye. We loved this tour as much as our dogs and highly recommend it. They are totally crazy after that!

Old Savannah Wagon Tours offers tours of the historic area and welcomes small dogs to sit on their laps during rides. Vehicle Tours Savannah accepts dogs in private vehicle tours and can also accommodate small dogs for shared tours. If you want to visit Bonaventure Cemetery with your dog, consider booking a tour with Savannah Cruisers, which will take you on a golf cart tour of the cemetery. And so many more
