An interesting fact about Lake McDonald Lodge is that the main entrance faces the lake instead of the later Sun Road.

The rooms themselves are rustic and relatively basic, which is the norm for many accommodations in Glacier National Park, but comfortable. They offer everything you need to relax, clean and sleep while visiting the park.

Popular hikes include Trail of the Cedars, Avalanche Lake, and Sperry Chalet, while nearby Macdonald Creek and Sacred Dance Falls and Cascade are beautiful sights along the way.

Western Montana’s Glacier Country

Located halfway along the north shore of Lake St. Mary, Rising Sun Motor Inn and Cabins is the closest lodging option to Logan Pass.

This is the best place to stay in Glacier National Park if you are planning an early morning hike in the area. Popular trails include the Sun World Nature Trail, Sunrift Canyon to Baring Falls, and St. Mary’s and Virginia Falls.

Rising Sun also puts you in the best position to get a car on the very busy Logan Pass, the highest point on the road to the sun. If you want to hike the Hidden Lake Overlook or the Highline Trail, two of Glacier National Park’s biggest hikes, you must stay there.

Dating back to 1940, Rising Sun Motor Inn and Cabins has 72 units. As the name suggests, there is motel-style accommodation as well as separate two-storey cabins.

All accommodation units have a private bathroom, but no air conditioning, telephone or TV. Again, this is to keep the “era of built-in rooms”.

In terms of amenities, there is a general store and gift shop, as well as a two-way, full-service beach resort. Both cruise and Red Bus tours are available.
