Dog Friendly Vacation Spots In Texas

Dog Friendly Vacation Spots In Texas – Fall is the best time of year to get outdoors and take the best wildlife weekend trips in Texas. The weather is finally getting colder, but not so cold that you want to pack some winter gear. Daytime walks are not only possible, but they’re also fun and safer for you and your dog. At night, the temperatures drop enough to warrant a cozy campfire under the stars, where you can make s’mores or just snuggle with your child under a blanket.

Fortunately for San Antonio, there are many beautiful places within easy driving distance. Whether you’re looking for a camping experience, a luxury cabin, or something in between, there’s something for everyone. If the warm summer months are upon you, it’s time to pack your bags, hop in the car and head to one of these three petting zoos in Texas.

If you’ve been on Instagram, you’ve probably seen these cute little houses in remote locations across the United States. There are three outposts in Texas, all within easy driving distance of San Antonio: one outside Dallas (4.5 hours from SA), one outside Houston (3 hours from SA), and one outside Austin/San Antonio (specifically in Wimberley). , only about 1 hour away)!

Although they are in the middle of nowhere, each house has a comfortable queen-size bed with beautiful nature views, a bathroom with shower and toilet, and a small bathroom with cooking utensils. The best part is that Getaway is so affordable that the cleaning fee is only $40! They offer food and water bowls, s’mores dog baskets, and even a long outdoor leash that allows you to keep your dog on a leash but still give him room to run around.

According to the founder, Getaway was created “to give people time, space and permission to travel. Our little cabins in nature are a respite from the city, technology and work, so you can stay connected and with who and what matters.”

If you’re looking to get away from it all without the stress, this is the perfect getaway for you and your dog!

If you are looking for something that will connect you with nature, then 13 Acres Retreat is the place for you! I first came across this hidden gem while looking for a weekend getaway for my husband of two years and I last winter. These beautiful homes are located on 13 acres of wilderness outside of Dripping Springs, just an hour and a half from San Antonio.

Each room has a refrigerator/freezer, mini coffee maker, comfortable bed with fresh linens and beautiful views of the Texas rolling hills. There are two temporary toilets on site, but don’t let that put you off! The decor is so beautiful and so clean! Other amenities include a water cooler to fill your reusable bottle, a sink with soap for dishes and hands, and a hot shower. However, there is an outdoor pool which is very beautiful but also a bit chilly if you come here in the colder months.

There is no shortage of things to do during your stay at 13 Acres Retreat. You can stroll around the property (note: there are no roads, so it’s an adventure!) or hop in a car and explore some of the nearby national parks like Pedernales Falls. If you don’t fancy walking (or traveling with your dog), you can also visit some of the dog-friendly wineries, all within a 20-30 minute drive. My favorite is Hawk’s Shadow Winery.

If you didn’t visit Lost Maples this fall, you’re missing out. Lost Maples State Natural Area is located less than 2 hours from San Antonio and is known to be one of the few places in Texas where you can see amazing fall foliage temperature drops – usually mid-October or early November. Texas weather is unpredictable, but you can view the park’s annual color report here.

Once the leaves start to change color, the fallen maples will be a hotspot! It is highly recommended to reserve your campsite in advance – sometimes up to a year in advance! Due to COVID, access is limited and you must reserve passes (camping and day trips) in advance online or by calling customer service.

I promise you, the effort is worth it! Not only is Lost Maples a beautiful piece of nature year-round, there are also more than 10 miles of hiking trails to explore, including a loop that takes you to the top of the 200-foot cliff. There are 30 campsites with water and electricity connections and 50 old campsites within walking distance, most of which are a short walk from compost toilets.

If you or your pup aren’t really into camping, you can make Lost Maple a day trip. Close enough to leave in the morning, enjoy a walk and drive home in the evening. It’s hard to spend a night or two under the stars though, especially when it’s cold enough to snuggle up in your sleeping bag with your little one!
