In recent years there has been a steady trend of Parvo positive dogs coming into local veterinary clinics, veterinary emergency centers and shelters and the best way to stop the spread is to vaccinate against the virus. Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that has a high fatality rate if left untreated. Parvo is resistant to heat, cold, wet and dry environments and will survive in the environment (house, yard, bed, carpet, rug, bowl and carpet) for very long periods. Parvovirus attacks the intestines and symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, bloating, fever or low body temperature, severe vomiting and diarrhea that can cause rapid dehydration and eventually damage the intestines and immune system resulting in shock. Small and old dogs are most at risk, but even older dogs will contract the virus. Treating a dog for parvo is expensive and not always successful, so prevention is important.
Rabies is a very dangerous virus transmitted through the saliva of sick animals. Anyone can become infected if an animal carries the virus. The Centers for Disease Control reports that an annual decline of about 25% in the dog population requires revaccination. Madness kills more than 55,000 people worldwide. LC4 runs this clinic to protect the safety and health of not only the dogs, but also the people who interact with them. Rabies is required by law in most counties and cities in the state of Ohio and surrounding states.
