We’ve compiled our rankings based on a few key factors that most pet owners looking to move will look at. To keep the data as objective as possible, we chose to use only key factors for which data were readily available from publicly available sources for each city.

We’ll also look at other considerations that don’t fit our criteria, like walkability and temperature, but may be useful for pet parents to consider when moving to a new city.

Factors like the overall quality of pet care or even the lengths parents are willing to go for their pets are not included in our rankings! Our ranking is only part of the story and reveals some of the pet affordability factors you may face when moving to a new city.

We’ve highlighted a few key components to share with you from which we can derive quantitative data, but there are also many qualitative factors to consider before deciding whether a city is pet-friendly.

To determine the cities used in our ranking system, we selected the ten most populous cities in the US and Canada, respectively. 

U.S. urban population is based on the 200 largest U.S. cities by population in 2023, according to the World Population Review, available in January 2023.

Data on dog parks in cities listed in the U.S. was compiled using the Trust for Public Land’s 2022 Amenities and Amenities Report, available in January 2023.

The number of dog-friendly places on Bring Fido was collected across all 76 UK cities to identify the most popular areas.
