Best Dog-friendly Holidays Scotland – If you’re looking for a UK getaway where you can take your dog(s) and relax in a remote wonderland, I’ve found it…
I sat and watched the wind pick up and the waves pick up, as the dogs came closer to me. Ollie is on the couch reading a book, and I’m sitting with a big cup of tea, some delicious cookies, and my laptop, where I need to write.

I put my phone down, the WiFi is off, and I have no distractions other than the occasional odd song on my iPod. No Eminem “Real Slim Shady” doesn’t suit my mood right now… LEAVE!
Dog Friendly Holiday Cottages In Scotland From £35
I’ve been on the Irver in Noidart, Scotland for three days now and I’m completely and utterly comfortable. I had no expectations, no to-do list, no social media minimum, no plan for this vacation!
I live in Camsblathen, less than 100 meters from the sea, overlooking the Isle of Skye in the distance. I waited 5 years to return to this little piece of paradise in the UK and finally I’m back.
We stayed in the Neudart bunkhouse and my brother and I walked in the hills while my dad met some locals about sustainable forest management. I’ve only been here for a few days but I know I have to come back one day, I can’t believe it’s been 5 years but here I am.
This time the cottage I was staying with Ollie, Roland and Baxter was in Irver, a small village about 7 miles from the main village of Inverness. Although Knoydart is on the UK mainland, you can only reach it by boat or by walking a few miles from the nearest road. In the off peak season ferries from Malaig run about 3 times a day although cars are not allowed, not that there are many places to go.
Dog Friendly Accommodation In Hostels And Bunkhouses.
This holiday should always be a no-plan holiday… and with slow wifi, the only pub closed for the season, and only one shop and two cafes within 7 miles, there was nothing to do but relax.
So far I have drunk about 20 cups of tea, cooked and eaten a lot of food, walked the dogs 3 times and read 1.5 books. Hygge at its best!
The view from here is unparalleled. Last time I visited I saw sharks and porpoises on the boat and this time we saw moose, a martin and lots of local sheep.
With the post only 3 times a week and more than a small post office shop for supplies, you have to bring everything you need with you, meaning packing light wasn’t easy this time. Especially with two dogs!
East Fife Holiday Homes
The cottage we stayed in had 7 bedrooms, including three double beds and one room with an extra single bed.
The kitchen is well equipped with all necessary kitchen equipment, including a dishwasher, two wood burning stoves, three sofas and a large dining table that comfortably seats 7.
The owner David has renovated this property to be a cozy and comfortable home by the sea. Many local photographs and paintings adorn the walls, and pebbles and pebbles from the beach add to the decor. There are plenty of books, DVDs, and board games to keep you entertained for more than a week. We tried a 1000 piece jigsaw but didn’t quite get there!
Best of all, you’re seconds away from a brisk walk along the beach or a long hike in the hills. The house is dog friendly, with a balcony to clean muddy paws before entering, and any dog will be happy to cuddle up in front of one of the fires on a cold day.
Scotland Pet-friendly Holiday Rentals
There are many local dogs who will happily join the walk, and although there are some areas with sheep where dogs must be present, there are many walks where your dog can roam free.
It’s hard to capture the serenity of this place, but I hope my photos do it justice.
David will lend his 7 seater Toyota Land Cruiser to anyone for you to use to and from the village throughout the week. It takes about 40 minutes to drive the 7 miles from the cottage to Inverry on a single track (with several crossing points).
We are off season here so the pub famous for fresh fish is closed but there are a few cafes open during the day, the post office shop and the local shop.
The Stables At Kirkland: Luxury Self-catering In Dumfries & Galloway
Tomorrow evening we will visit a local woodworking workshop, with wines and gifts made from the local forest. This is the only night we go out as we sadly miss the music evening at the village hall as we have to leave before Saturday night.
For such a small community, there seems to be something going on every week, everyone supporting each other’s local businesses as much as they can. I was surprised to find that most people actually work in Knoydart in one way or another and very few take the ferry to Malaga to work. There’s always a lot to do and a lot of people doing ‘skill swaps’ too. “If you help me with the electricity, I’ll build you a garden shed”. I love this!
I wonder why we don’t work hard on our neighbors at home, maybe when Ollie and I find our own house in the country and move to a small village or village?
David’s House is available for £750 per week (per week, no extra charge for school holidays) during the high season from March to October. This includes the use of a 4×4 vehicle, unlimited wood for the fire and all essential household items such as toilet roll, kitchen foil, oil and spices, sheets and towels. You only need to bring food and drinks and other things that you can pack for the holiday.
Dog Friendly Holiday Cottages In The Scottish Highlands
There are limited accommodation options at Knoydart, so book places for next year in advance, but you can check availability at Camusblathan on the website.
Wouldn’t it be great to visit dog friendly Dumfries and Galloway on your next trip to Scotland with the dogs!
I decided to visit Knoydart and stay at Camusblathen and David offered me a discounted rate to cover his expenses, although as always the opinions are 100% mine and true.
David is going on a big adventure of his own this year, walking over 6,000 miles across the UK for nearly two years, volunteering to listen to a Samaritan spruce every day. You can find out more about David’s walk on his Facebook page.
