Home to the rugged White Mountains (in the 800,000-acre White Mountain National Forest), which make up a quarter of the state and 100.9 miles of the Appalachian Trail, there’s no shortage of amazing hikes!

There are so many hikes in NH that there are even two hiking lists; NH 48 (48 hills above 4000 feet) and 52 WAV (52 with views!).

In the White Mountains, the NH 48 list and the WAV 52 list partially overlap, but all include some of the best hikes in New England.

I had to top the list of all the best tours in New England with King! Highest mountain in New England, 6,288 feet, Mount Washington.

When you map this beauty from a distance, you will notice it. Mount Washington is far from the top of many other climbs on this list, and being able to climb it and say you’ve climbed it is quite an achievement!

A popular and well-traveled trail from this bad boy is the Teckman Raven and Lion Head Trail. I wouldn’t recommend doing this in the winter, but I think you’re probably new to hiking in New England and don’t want to tackle the toughest mountain in the coldest month! If so, be sure to do more research because the summit of Mount Washington has some of the worst weather and highest wind speeds in the world.

This hike deserves the second spot on our list of the best hikes in New England. The infamous Franconia Ridge is probably the most popular (and challenging) mountain hike on our list.

You’ll cover about 3.1 miles and about 2,900 feet of elevation gain to reach Hastic Mountain, where you’ll have stunning scenic views for a full mile along the Franconia Ridge.

I had to include this moderate but short hike on our New England Favorites list, and you may recognize the look.

After about 900 feet of climbing, you’ll be atop Willard Mountain with a spectacular view of the Crawford Notch Valley and Route 302 below.

The Dog Chapel, Saint Johnsbury

Those views and the tallest waterfall in New Hampshire?! This hike should be on your New England hiking bucket list!

A 4.9-mile loop with about 1,700 feet of elevation gain, following the trail counter-clockwise you’ll reach the first Frankenstein Rocks, an experience in itself.

Enjoy the view of Crawford Notch State Park stretching endlessly before you, then continue until you reach Arethosa Falls, the tallest in NH, at the 3.4 mile mark. Enjoy this beautiful day!

Although not 4,000 feet high, this DIV is a very scenic hike with a variety of hills and sweeping views.

I have done sunrise tours in both North Sugarloaf and Middle Sugarloaf. The middle view of Sugarloaf is the most expansive with an almost 360 degree view, so if I had to pick one it would be the middle.

Fortunately, you can tackle the northern and middle sections of the 3.3-mile Sugarloaf Trail, which climbs more than 1,000 feet.

The summit of Mount Pierce via the Crawford Trail is a 5.9-mile round-trip hike that gains about 2,400 feet in elevation.

It’s a rocky trail and it won’t be easy to get to the top, but if you want a bench with a western view of Mt. Washington as the sun sets, park at Pierce Peak View!

I call the Mount Crawford hike on the Davis Trail a best kept secret because it doesn’t get the attention I think it deserves!

It’s not 4000 feet that takes it off the table for those interested in the NH48 list, and it’s not easy!

But it does have views of Crawford Notch State Park and the valley below at 4,000 feet! And it was nice not to see many people on the way.

New Hampshire has many great mountains and breathtaking mountains, but I want to include New England’s second highest mountain on this list.

At 5.6 miles and 2,700 feet in elevation, this hike is a challenge! But when you climb to the top, you will slowly forget all that because you are rewarded with the most amazing views.

It may seem like a lot of climbing or miles, but when you get to the top you are looking at two huge piles of rocks! That’s the best way to describe it.

It will tire you to climb each one like a ladder master and it will never end. But looking back and through these photos, I want to try this hike again!
