Firstly, if you are wondering how to ride the east coast from Melbourne to Sydney, there are many ways to do it.
The Top 10 East Coast Destinations Every Backpacker Should Visit In Australia
You can always choose your own destination for a trip to the east coast, but the best way is to fly into Melbourne and drive leisurely to Cairns, as most people do. Note that summer in Victoria and NSW is monsoon in Queensland.
Melbourne has the hottest restaurants and clubs, film festivals, markets and more. Don’t miss ACMI, the Australian Center for the Moving Image, where you’ll see some of the world’s best exhibitions over these two days.
Melbourne is known by some as the cultural center of Australia. Expect great coffee shops dotting the streets, incredible street art that you probably won’t find anywhere else in the country and some hidden bars that definitely don’t run like Sydney. The goalkeeper might live in Sydney!), Melbourne is known as Australia’s version of London.
When you start your trip to Sydney, don’t forget to visit the hot springs of Mornington Peninsula and Wilson’s Promontory National Park.

If you go camping, I would recommend staying overnight at Eden. Old Whaling City is a little gem on the east coast of Australia. You will find absolutely stunning beaches and you must stop at Bega to buy the famous Bega Valley cheese!
MtKosciuszko is the highest mountain in Australia, at 2,228 meters. You can climb it in 6-8 hours (learn more about climbing Mount Kosciuszko here), but the real reason I went there was to swim in the Yarangobili Cave Thermal Pool. It’s only a 700m walk from the car park, so don’t expect any walking, although it is a bit on the steep side, so be careful if you have children. Best of all, the temperature stays at 27C all year round!
If you’re looking for some of Australia’s best beaches, head to Jervis Bay, just three hours from Sydney. Hymns Beach is known for having the whitest sand in the world, but I think the adjacent Chinaman’s Beach is even better. Make sure to check out my guide to looking here.

Top 5 Luxury Destinations To Visit On The East Coast Of America
You can easily take a bus from Melbourne to Sydney, or if you’re driving, you can continue your journey after visiting Kosciuszko National Park. Stay in one of the best hotels with a view, treat yourself to a great dinner and explore one of the city’s many gems. Sydney is known for its incredible beaches and promenades, so make sure you have a good day to explore it and hire a car here to do so.
Make sure you don’t miss a visit to the Blue Mountains, one of the most beautiful places near Sydney.
The Central Coast is a stunning gem near Sydney. If you’re wondering why Byron is known as an East Coast favorite, it’s easy to see why; The city has a laid-back, surfer, hippie, healthy-eating vibe, but when you get out into the countryside, it becomes really beautiful.

East Coast Australia Itinerary
Noosa is the next stop worth visiting. It’s located on Australia’s Sunshine Coast, and is a popular getaway to Fraser Island (a must-see!), it’s also the best place to visit the Australia Zoo. You can visit some remote but stunning beaches and explore its wildlife. If you are a nature lover, Noosa National Park needs to be on your bucket list. Noosa is a popular destination for families and from what I hear, it’s like a nicer version of Byron Bay.
When you’re done with Noosa, head up the east coast and stop at a small beach town called 1770. It’s an amazing location – where the Grand Barrier Reef meets the surf beach. Must see However, one of the best things about this place is the scooter rue tour.
You’ll ride a Harley Davidson in a leather jacket while watching kangaroos, the ultimate Aussie experience. You don’t want to miss this!
The popular backpacker town of Airlie Beach is a must-visit as it is the gateway to the Whitsundays. It’s home to one of the best beaches in the world, and you’d be crazy to miss a few days of boating around the island. This is a must visit on your east coast trip!

This is the place where you want to relax, snorkel, swim in the crystal blue waters and have fun. If you don’t really care when visiting this amazing Australia, you can plan your trip around the Island Life Beach Party at Magnet Island, which is a must for guests. I like to rent a fun barbie like jeep to drive around the island. You don’t want to miss this location!
After you’ve finished hanging out at Airlie Beach, snorkelling at the Cairns and seaplane diving over the Great Barrier Reef and Reef, you won’t regret it! I would recommend Cairns for backpackers, Palm Cove for couples and Port Douglas for families.
Two hours north of Cairns lies the stunning Cape Tribulation in the world’s oldest rainforest, the Daintree National Park. At over 165 million years old, it’s hard to forget how beautiful it is. Be sure to take a night hike in the area and then have breakfast at Cape Tribulation Beach – you won’t see anyone around 8:30am, making it a great place to have your first lunch and fun of the day.
While there are other things to see and explore on this road trip, these are some of the more treasured spots from our East Coast trip that we remember and we recommend spending a few days at each of these destinations. .one of my (many) things about the US is how different it is from state to state. It’s one of those countries where you can cross between states and places to see different parts of the country, which is actually a great experience (did someone say road trip?).
